Amazon and Samsung in a tight race for second place behind Apple in the tablet market

In advance of Apple’s event this week, Parks Associates announced new research today showing Amazon and Samsung are locked in a tight race for second place behind Apple in the tablet market, which overall shows signs of cooling even as adoption remains high. Parks Associates’ 360 View: Mobility and the App Economy, which highlights and analyzes results from a 1Q 2014 survey of 10,000 U.S. broadband households, finds 16% have an Amazon tablet and 14% have a Samsung tablet, while Apple’s share has dropped from 46% in 1Q 2012 to 37%, which includes a combination of the iPad and the iPad Mini.

Facebook and Skype Most Popular Smartphone Messaging Apps in U.S. Claims Park Associates Report

Facebook Messenger and Skype are the most popular messaging apps in the U.S., according to Parks Associates’ new industry report The Post-SMS War for Mobile Communications: Text Messaging.

“Among messaging app users, 53% use Facebook Messenger, and 45% use Skype,” said Tejas Mehta, research analyst, Parks Associates. “These two apps are dominant in this high-growth area. At the beginning of 2014, 34% of U.S. smartphone owners used a messaging app on a monthly basis. The difficulty, especially for new entrants, is turning user growth into revenues.”

28% of U.S. Broadband Households Use a Connected Game Console as Primary Connected CE Device

Parks Associates today announced new Consumer Analytics research, Connected Game Consoles, that shows 46% of U.S. broadband households have a game console connected to the Internet and over one-quarter (28%) use the connected gaming console as their primary connected CE device. Among these primary console users, roughly three-quarters use the gaming console to access non-gaming content online at least weekly, and nearly 40% access such content for more than 10 hours per week.
