I have a wired network using a Thomson Speedtouch 510 router and have recently needed wireless access so bought a Belkin F5D7130 802.11g 54Mbps Wireless Access Point and a Belkin Wireless G+ Desktop Card. The idea is to access the network (and in turn the internet) on a pc in a part of the house that wires wont reach neatly.

When setting the access point up in AP mode I can not receive a signal at my desktop. This is not a range problem as I have put the acces point next to the desktop to test that.

Am i missing something fundamental???

Any help will be greatfully received

Sorry, no idea about your specific kit, what you’ve tried, or your level of expertise Albunt.

however :- AP’s I’ve used have always worked out of the box. Be it with default settings ie, ssid set as default/Linksys or similar, and channel set to 6, with no security enabled.

Sooo, I would re-set the AP back to factory settings via the re-set switch, usually on the back somewhere. Connect it to a spare LAN port on your router. At this point the pwr and LAN lights should be lit, and the WLAN light flashing on the AP. The corresponding LAN light should also be lit on your router.

On your PC, enter your configuration set up application which would come with your card and which you should have loaded when you installed your new cards driver.

If there’s an infrastructure/ad-hoc mode set to the former.
Scan, or similar for available networks. If you get lucky? Connect.

If this fails see if you can get your hands on a wireless enabled Laptop to look for a signal from the AP. At least this may give you an idea at which end the problem is?

1: On PC, Click on START, and then click on RUN.
2: The RUN dialogue box will appear. Type CMD and press ENTER.
3: A DOS window will appear. This is also commonly called a Command Prompt.
4:Now type IPCONFIG /ALL at the command prompt and hit ENTER. This window will now display the configuration of all of your network adapters.
5: You are looking for MAC ADDRESS, The MAC Address will be listed under the heading Ethernet adapter Wireless Network Connection. It should look something like 00-50-BA-D1-BA-71. (WRITE IT DOWN)
6:To close the window when you are finished, type exit at the command prompt and hit the Enter key.
7: login to the access point and add the PC's mac address
8: still in the access point, check to see if any wireless secrurity is set. if so you will need the key to be entered into the pc.
Because i dont know if you use windows built in wireless manager or another i wont write the TUT for it, but if you PM me if you stuck i'll help..

GOOD LUCK BUDDY...
