Hi,
Here is what I have - a wired desktop, a laptop (with preinstalled wireless
card). a Linksys broadband router (connected to my phones and modem for
Vonage service) and a Netgear wireless router (so I can connect to the
internet with my laptop) and and of course a modem. oh, I also have tivo
with a wireless network adapter, which makes its daily calls (as I
understand it) via my wireless router.
So, this set -up was working fine until my netgear wireless router stopped
working one fine day. After some attempted tech support, netgear said it
was probably a defect in the piece and swapped it for another one.
I basically just put back the new netgear wireless in the same exact set
up. However, while my tivo is able to connect to the netgear wireless
router and successfully make its calls, my laptop cannot connect to the
internet. Oddly, it does recognise Netgear wireless connection as
excellent.
I called netgear. They told me (after running me thru a couple of ping
commands) that my laptop was talkintg to the wireless router, but the
wireless router was not talking to my modem. After explaining my set up,
they suggested that i convert my wireless router to an access point, and
gave me some directions - which apparently was all I was eligible for,
since my warranty on the original router had expired.
Anyway, as he said, I tried connecting the wireless router directly to the
wired desktop computer, and typing in 191.168..the ip address he gave me to
configure my router to make it an access point. But it will not go to this
address......
The operation times out...
Can someone please help?
PS - am a novice, so if you can make the instructions reasonably simple,
would be great!
Thanks

You have to make sure your desktop is also confiured with an ipaddress and
subnet mask in the same range. In Windows XP, open the start menu, RIGHT
click on Network Places, then click properties. You should see an icon for
Local Area Connection. Right click that icon and click properties.
Doubleclick internet protocol tcp/ip . Make a note of your current
settings. If your wireless router ip is 192.168.1.1, specify 192.168.1.2
and subnet 255.255.255.0 in your desktop. You don't need a dns server so
just leave that setting alone. Click ok a few times and now you should be
able to reach your wireless router at 192.168.1.1. If you still get a
timeout, you need to be sure you are plugged into the lan port of the
router and not the wan/internet port. Also, make sure you have a good
physical link. This should be indicated by a green link light on the router
lan port you are connected to. If you disable dhcp on your wireless router
and plug your connection into the lan port and not the wan port, then you
will be using it as a wireless hub/access point. ____________________ --jack
