I have an Orinoco PCMCIA Gold card in my dell
laptop which is running SuSE Linux. The card works
fine....took it to a friend's place and can get
on his network no problem. However, my AP is a
little D-link DI514. My Orinoco card can receive
the D-link WAN MAC address, but I cannot get on
the internet. I have enabled then disabled MAC
filtering to see if the problem was there. I
have enabled then disabled WEP encryption for the
same reason. When I ping the AP from my laptop,
it doesn't get through. No connection. My ISP is
roadrunner, and my AP is set as DHCP. Seems to
assign IP's OK. My desktop to which the AP is
connected is running Windows2000.
The MAC address of the D-link ends in 8D, yet
the MAC address of the WAN is exactly the same
except it ends in 8C. I know the AP has a
router attached also which probably would have its
own MAC address, and it is normal for an AP
to have a number of MAC addresses.
This is very frustrating.

I had the same EXACT problem and have been
pulling out my hair for a month.
Here's the solution:
-Goto the D-link router configuration site
(198.168.0.1)
-Click on the Advanced tab at the top, then
click the Performance button on the left
-Change the Preamble setting to long
-Wait for router to restart, close programs, and
try to get on the internet.
This was posted for various Apple forums. Hope
this helps. |

I've been trying to get WEP and this D-link
router to work every since I got it months ago.
That preamble setting did the trick. Cheers. |

I also had to register just to comment. I
didn't even look at the preamble setting until I
read this posting while searching on similar issues.
Shouldn't it be set to LONG by default! jesu

I have a similar problem (please keep in mind
that I am not to up-to-snuff on this stuff). On
the router's control page thing, it shows my
laptop, the IP and whatnot and soforth. Then, on
the status page, under wireless, it says that it's
been sending and recieving packets of info. However,
my laptop, which says it is connected to the
IPPS or ISSP or w/e, says it's only sending
packets, but says it hasn't recieved any. Could the
above solution answer my problem? Thanks a lot

I recently attached an ethernet cable to my laptop,
and now I can share files and printers, but
still when I go to CMD and type net view
it shows just the laptop. However, changling the
preamble to long just made my speed go down to
1 mbps, and didn't help n e thing. Thanks,
