I wanna connect a Lucent Orinoco Silver WaveLAN card (Linux/Win/MacOS X box) to a D-Link DWL-1000AP Access Point (proprietary appliance box), but unfortunately there are some mysteries which I quite cannot understand or explain!

When entering my password into the AP, it converts 'dog2b' (ASCII) into 'A70C0AD3A8' (Hex), when entering the very same ASCII password under Linux, it results in Hex '646F673262', rather different than the D-Link code! How comes?

Another 'funny' thing:

bash# iwconfig eth1 key s:dog2b
bash# iwconfig eth1
:
Encryption key:646F-6732-62 [4]
:
bash# wavemon -d
:
encryption:646F673262 [0]
:
bash# iwconfig eth1 key A70C-0AD3-A8 (<- that’s how the key should look like!)
bash# iwconfig eth1
:
Encryption key:A70C-0AD3-A8 [4]
:
bash# wavemon -d
:
encryption:FFFFFFA7 C AFFFFFFD3FFFFFFA8 [0]
:

* Why is it that when entering a hex key iwconfig does it properly, but wavemon displays an obviously second time converted key?
* Where is the encryption done? Inside the WLAN card/AP?
* Why is there a difference between the D-Link encryption an the Linux encryption?
* Why is there a difference between the iwconfig key and the wavemon key?

I’m really frustated! (
