I'd really appreciate some help understanding if the
scenario I'm describing below is possible..
We have several wireless devices such as pdas and
laptops which need to connect to a wireless
network but they must be able to be transported
anywhere and still connect effortlessly to the
wireless network.
What I'd like to do is have an access point
which connects to the internet (via a cat 5 or
another wireless network) and creates it's own
wireless network with it's own encryption (WEP) and
settings. That way the PDAs (which are fiddly and
have wireless limitations) can be configured to
connect to this one network, no matter how the
original internet connection is set up with the
access point.
Firstly, is this possible? Secondly can anyone suggest
an access point that can connect to one wireless
network and create it's own wireless network. I've
looked at this device:

There are a number of outdoor wireless ap's from
CellAmericas (www.cellamericas.com) that will connect to
the web - through, say any off the shelf router,
and issue it's own ip address, wep settings,
bssid, etc. So you can configure those units, set
your hand held devices to connect to that ssid,
and get to the web.

Generally speaking as Coupdgras says, any AP can be
configured in AP mode, to connect to a wired
net - then transmit wirelessly with whatever name,
on whatever channle you want.
To be honest mind, I can't se any benifit in
trying, as every network is different so you're
going to have to reconfigure the AP using the
fiddly PDA controles every time you want to change
provider anyway. 1 setting will not give you
access to all wired providers, as 1 wireless
setting wont give you access to all wireless
providers.
