so i have my notebook,this HP-Pavilion dv5 1105-el.it
has an incorporated wireless card.at the moment i
am getting signal from a nearby hot-spot wireless,it
seems to be a D-link G604T.the problem is i am
not getting a strong signal so yesterday an idea
came by to my head.why not get some product
that could pickup the signal,a product that could
provide a better signal.so i got to a pc store
and i bought this Belkin N Wireless Router.at the
store they told me that it can act as a
range extender.ok so this is what i want to do
more specifically.i want to link this Belkin N
Router to the hot-spot wireless that's nearby my
home (i want to mention the fact that the
hot-spot is NOT password protected and i can access
the internet anytime).after i link my router to
the hot-spot wifi,i want to link my laptop to
the router via wifi or via ethernet cable.i still
dont know if any of these methods are working
but i preffer wifi, ofcourse.so i have tried to
connect it somehow but i am not so experienced
when it comes to networking/wifi.now please, describe
step-by-step the procedure to make this work.thank
you.

The forum won't let you post links (unless you
are a regular with so many posts to prevent
spam), so here is a page on our own store for
reference to similar routers: Belkin
N Wireless Router
If you can access the router and are able to
browse the internet and the only problem is a
weak signal, yes there are Wireless Range
Extenders and Wireless
Signal Boosters that can usually do the trick.
If you are using the laptop most times, setup a
wi-fi connection in your laptop so it connects to
your router (wirelessly), though it's better if you
plugged the LAN cable and set up a wired
connection directly to the router, you get full
100.00+ Mbps LAN speed (that is if it's directly
plugged to the phone line or cable for the
internet), whereas with Wi-Fi it depends on the
wi-fi card and is slower. Read instructions on how
to setup the Belkin N wireless router, because it
acts as a range extender, it may have one or
more different configurations.
The D-link DSL-G604T Wireless
ADSL Modem you are picking up signal from and
have access to may just be a matter of time
until the owner works out how to secure it,
unless is deliberately open. In the meantime, it's
not easy to give an accurate answer here as you
are trying to use your router to connect to
another router nearby and have your laptop connect
to your router, I can't see the benefit and
signal strength may just be the same if not
worse. However, I am sure there is a way and
there are a couple of discussions here (Connecting two wireless routers) or search
for "two wireless routers". Your setup looks to
me like you're trying to hook-up two routers, one
with ADSL access and the other without but with
range extending capabilities and possibly as a
repeater.
