I live in the UK and have an adsl broadband connection via a modem that plugs into my PC. My brother has just bought his house which is no more that 200 metres away from mine and is visible in a straight line. We both have PCs that run Windows XP. What I would like to achieve is a WiFi network between the two houses so that he can share files from my PC but also piggyback off my adsl broadband connection. Is this possible ? I know that I would need an adsl modem with a WiFi router built in and I think Netgear do one. Also how can I extend the range of the signal so that is covers at least 250 metres outdoors.

you need a wireless router & two wireless adapter card to establish a wireless network...
i would suggest to go for linksys products....because linksys are the cheap & best products....

for a extending the network you too need an access point.....
buy all this & give a message on this board & i will let you know how to config.. all this things..

Yes I don't see any harm in that.
Just get two Belkin 54g Wi-Fi cards or similar, stick one in each PC, configure the PC with the Internet connection as a Server, the other as Client, then you'll have an Ad-Hoc / computer-to-computer network.
Of course you'll need to configure both (file and printer sharing, which files to share etc)... the cards will come with drivers etc.
Around 100 meters I am sure most will have maximum signal, 200 metres possible, if not you'll loose a bit of signal, but is feasible.
If for some reason there is no signal (after making sure it is not your set-up...), a router/gateway or a different set-up may be required, at least you'll already have the cards (better to buy router/gateway...from same manufacturer).

A good way is to set them up in the same house if that is possible, once signal is OK, take the client one to the other house, if there is no signal at least you'll know it's to do with distance!

I hear of people getting near maximum signal at 500 metres and for some a lot more, but that depends on locations in the landscape.

Take heart, not really too tricky at all.

First, do you need/want wireless roaming in your house? If you do then you'll want a wireless router in your house to connect to the ADSL modem from your provider. OK?

Use your embedded WiFi card to conenct ot this router or PCcard if your laptop isn;t a newer Centrino-ized WiFi enabled model.

Now, for your brother's house: I recommend an Ethernet Bridge. Using D-LINK brand you can use EXTERNAL antennas and BOOST the distance easily. I personally used a Ethernet bridge and a 36 db grid antenna for a 12 MILE connection for a year, so it's easily done.

The Ethernet bride has --- tah dahhhh - an Ethernet port that you use an Ethernet cable to connect to your brother's laptop. And he's off to the races pulling down all the pictures your bandwidth can handle.

And , also, if he wants to roam in his apartment, he simply connects the Ethernet cable from the bridge to an Access point. Do not use another router there as it gets hinky (technical term) to use multiple routers in consumer gear setup - not the best idea for newbies.
