Sudden loss of signal; hardware changed to no effect

Thread: Sudden loss of signal; hardware changed to no effect

Original Setup:

2 PCs, one with Linksys USB wireless adapter (mine), one with Linksys internal wireless adapter card (wife's).
Wireless router - Linksys
Broadband connection - ntl

Current Setup:

2 PCs, one with Belkin internal wireless adapter card (mine), one with Linksys internal wireless adapter card (wife's).
Wireless router - Belkin
Broadband connection - ntl

History:

Set up my wireless network under a year ago. The adapters were reversed originally and my wife's PC was constantly losing the network. Swapped the adapters over (to the setup stated above) and it's been basically OK. Mine lost the network occasionally but not enough to worry about.

On Sunday morning, I turned my PC on but it couldn't find the wireless network. It *could* see other networks in neighbouring flats. Repeated refreshing of the "available networks" brought my network up occasionally but never for long enough to even make the connection. My wife's PC was behaving identically.

I connected the router to my PC directly and it worked fine. I sat the router next to my wife's PC and it picked up the wireless network at very close range without the need to connect router to wife's PC directly.

All of this said to me: "The modem and internet connection from ntl must be OK or it wouldn't work even when connected directly. The PCs are OK as they couldn't both go wrong at exactly the same time. OK, I'll replace the router - maybe the aerials are broken and don't transmit a strong enough wireless signal."

Today I have replaced the wireless router, the cable connecting modem to router and put an internal wireless adapter card into my machine.

IT'S STILL NOT WORKING! AARRRGH!

I can scan for available networks and occasionally my network appears but never for very long. I can move the modem and router to my PC (in another room from the point that the broadband enters the house, so to speak) and connect PC and router with a network cable and it all works fine (as I am doing now). But the wireless network is still practically non-existant.

Help!

Morgan
