Emulate or copy from the desktop that has the connection working properly
to the desktop that is not. Maybe it has a different operating system (mac
- windows), set to different channel, some spyware maybe dragging it down,
anti-spyware or anti-virus set too strict and acting as a barrier etc.
Because you said it connects sometimes but with difficulty and numerous
tries, I suggested the above. Make sure also that all the machines except
the one physically connected to the Internet (server) if by "connection"
you mean connecting to the internet, HAVE internet connection sharing
disabled as they are not physically connected to the internet.
The desktop you are having difficulty with, that sees the connection but
can't connect may be allowed / have access to two or three machines but not
all, in this case, it will connect only if it has access.
The network name should be the same one for all, and as such YOU PROBABLY
EVEN HAVE A DUPLICATE NETWORK SETUP, which means, it can connect to one
desktop which it has access to, and don't for another as it does not have
access or NOT SHARED.
The best connections in my view are between machines running the same OS,
cards or at least from the same manufacturer and the same setup. Although
win98 machine has no problem with win xp machine, the two OSs if no set up
properly will cause connection conflicts and intermittance.
Difficult to have positive answer as all the setups, machines, OSs, Cards,
Wi-Fi network set up, Software, Firewalls....all need to be looked at.
Hope you solve the issue and good luck!

al the machines have the xp pro operating system and work wireless
(wirelless zero configuration disabled)
the antivirus on the pc is avg, the windows firewall is disabled (until
problem is solved) wep and wpa is currently disabled al the machines work
with a static ip (dhcp disabled)
connection sharing is also not active on al the machines (useless with a
router)
i asume everything is configured fine (i don't see 2 networks, only 1)
