Hi I'm a brand new Wi Fi user so please bear with me

If I use my laptop in a public space and my PC can connect to public unsecured networks is that safe to use? If I visit websites where I have to give my log in details is that openly transmitted. On my laptop I'm using the latest Norton Security Suite with the standard Vista Firewall switched on as usual.
