I am using a D-Link DI-614+ wireless broadband router, with two computers connected wirelessly. When I set an arbitrary encryption code for the 128 bit wireless encryption, and match it on the two wireless computers, only the Win98SE machine can still connect. The WinXP machine, despite having the same settings, will not connect without anything but a string of zeros set on the router and that machine. Any suggestions?

this is not the reply you are hoping to receive but WinXP is troubesome, some people may disagree with me but I prefere Win 98 SE, for some strange reasons it is more stable than ME or XP. It's not my area but I would swap the settings round and see what happens .

The first question is WHY are you using encryption in the first place? You need to be quite knowledgable about security issues to fully understand how to use it. If your in a home environment, you do not need encryption. If you have 'file and print sharing' turned, and are using a good software firewall, those shares can not be seen on the internet side of your router.
I disagree that XP is a real problem. I replaced 98SE with XP, pro on my PC and hom on my laptop. They both work excellent in either a LAN or W-LAN environment.
Unless you have real security issues, I would turn encryption off and make darned sure you change all of the 'defaults' on your WAP and your wireless cards. Dropping the number of users from the default down to the actual number of users on your WAP and you will be 'secure enough' from outside intrusion.

2 points here:

1. I wouldn't necessarily take chestert's advice about not needing encryption! Without encryption you might as well just tape your credit card to your front door (assuming you actually use the internet for something useful).

2. Since you're using WinXP, you might want to take a look at the actual network card settings. Specifically, after selecting Properties for your network connection, choose the Configuration option for the network card itself, and then it's Advanced settings. Depending on your card, you should be able to manually provide your encryption key here.

I am having the same issues now myself. My company just purchased a couple of 8200 access points from 3 Com. Everything works beautifully until I decide to set encrytion up. Win2000 or 98 machines with Various Wireless Nic's (3com, Linksys, etc.) allow me to set up and Use either an AlphaNumeric or Hex Key for 128 WEP encyrption. I was also able to get an Compaq IPAQ 5450 to work as well.
My problems came about much like yours When I try to get some of my laptops that have Win XP pro to use encryption (Some Toshiba's, Some Dell) I get no connection.
Sees the WAP but won't connect. Take Encryption off and it works.

Now XP is pretty stable, and i definatley recoomend it over 98, but i think Encypriton is amust for the home and work enviornments. I even go as far to lock down authentication by mac address.

Does anyone out there know how to get XP to do either AlphaNumeric or Hex Key for 128 WEP encyrption?

i suggest you to give 64 bit encrpt. key...i hope that it will definitely work..

1. it will also increase the speed of your computer
2. it will accept the key fo 64-bit...

otherwise if that does'nt works..

you can assign certain setttings in your windows registry for it:

registry name is:HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CURRENT CONTROL SET\SERVICES\LANMAN SERVICE\parameters

the set the value name as : Auto Disconnect
value to :0xffffffff
