In order to connect your laptop to desktop for file transfer or other things as well. Why don't you try this software that will allow you to do the job with least amount of work. here is the link

A link to the page rather than the file is better (who knows, it may be a worm)

In the network wizzard did you select connect through a residential gateway or router, and are you useing a firewall as this will stop computers seeing each other, plus the workgroup name needs to be the same on the computers you want to share files with this is also in the network wizzard.

your laptop and desktop are essentially parts of your lan. As such, you need to share the files you would like to access from the network. this can be done by either placing the file in the share folder or sharing the file manually. Right-click properties etc.

Dude!

Make sure that you have got the file and print sharing enabled under the lan properties. All the computers should have same workgroup name and a different computer name. All the computers should be able to ping each other. Make sure that your personal firewall have allowed to communicate to each other. Try this troubleshooting and i'm sure it'll defenetly work for u.
