Hi there,

First time on these boards so I hope I have put this in the right place.
In September myself and a few mates at uni are moving into the same flat in halls of residence.
Each room has internet access however being poor students we were thinking would it be possible to get a wireless router and go wi-fi thus sharing on connection costs.

The internet access in the rooms comes in through an RJ45 jack on the walls, so it isn't ADSL or cable as no modem is required. The halls must have a really fast connection which is then feed into a router and off to the various rooms.

My girlfriend currently lives at the same halls so I took my Linksys router round and hooked it up along with my notebook and Netgear wireless card to see if I could get it to go. ( I have a wireless setup with internet/file/printer sharing set up at home so I am not completely clueless)
I plugged it in the internet and my girlfiends machine in (wired) and started my notebook up wifi.
Both machines could not navigate to any webpages just got a 404.

My question is do you reckon this can be done and if so how do I go about setting it up?
I can't get any info from the halls ISP (they are hardly going to encourage me to give them less money by sharing connections amongst my mates!)

Any help greatly appreciated.

(Sorry for the length of this post!)

Chances are, they may have a firewall of some sort to prevent you doing that. Furthermore, they may have a closed LAN that can only be accessed through their own ethernet connection and their server only allows the hard wired connection.
You can always try who knows , if you can get in, it means the door is open, hence legal , students these days can get away with murder let alone wardriving, if you can't, it means they don't want you to!
