Are there any PCMCIA cards which will work with older Mac Powerbooks? I
suspect that the hardware will mostly work, but that drivers may be a
problem. I have one Powerbook which is now so old that it will only work
with older Mac OS's (Not OS/X) - but it may still be possible to get it
working if a card with drivers can be found.

Thanks. I have found the following :
The AeroCard (WPE-600) is a 802.11b wireless PCMCIA card designed for
PowerBooks that are not AirPort-card-ready.
With the AeroCard, every PowerBook user can enjoy the benefits of the
wireless network.
* OS Compatibility : MacOS 9.x/MacOS X
Supported PowerBook Models: PowerBooks 2400, 3400, G3, G4 with a
PCMCIA slot.
see mac-pro.com
Also MacWireless (www.macwireless.com) have several cards. They have high
and low power 11b cards, which it is claimed will even work with OS 7.5
upwards and older PowerBooks. I don't know what models are included.
See also www.lowendmac.com/musings/03/0122.html for a somewhat negative
view of 11g networking for older Macs (actually it seems optimistic, but
there isn't much evidence that any manufacturer is going to come up with
the goods ....)
There are also articles in TidBits - such as
db.tidbits.com/getbits.acgi?tbart=07200 - this one suggests equipment and
drivers for OS 9.
Some manufacturers such as D Link claim to be providing support for Macs.
You might just have to contact the major manufacturers to check for
compatibility. |

Check out www.ioxperts.com/devices_80211b.html They sell a Mac driver for
$20 that will work with countless cards. The MacSense Aerocard is minimum
$70. You can get a refurbished card of the ioexperts list for less than
$20, plus the $20 for the Mac driver.
After all, if you (like myself) are still using an older PowerBook, you
must value your dollars!
