I have just purchased a Netgear USB adapter
(WG111T) and have installed it per the instructions.
When I scan for networks it does not show my
access point (a Belkin wireless router) the adapter
does not find it although I can see several
networks from down the street. I know the the
access point is working because I can connect to
it from another laptop (the one i'm typing on
right now). Any ideas why this particular access
point is not seen by my netgear adapter?
can anyone explain exactly what is happening when
you scan for networks? can a network be configured
not to 'advertise' itself?

Wireless access points (APs) of a non-broadcast or
hidden wireless network do not broadcast their Service
Set Identifier (SSID). Because non-broadcast wireless
networks are not visible during an active scan,
users need to know the SSID and configure a
preferred wireless network before they can connect.
