Ok this may be a bit long sorry. I found this site doing a search on Google.. I have a desktop computer with Windows XP. A couple years back I bought a Tivo and in order to hook up my Tivo through the computer instead of the phone line I need a wirelss router and adapter.. I bought a Link Sys 811B router and a Lynk Sys wireless adapter to go with it. It is what Tivo recommended..

A year later I bought a Toshiba Laptop with a wireless card. Worked out good since I had this router. It worked fine in the house all over excpet at one website Pogo.com I would lose my connection to the game server but not my whole internet connection...

A few months back I wanted to have both of my Tivos networked together. I had bough another Tivo and one of my Tivos was still hooked up to the phone line. Anyway all I needed was another wireless adapter plugged in to the USB of my other Tivo and some software installed on my desktop. Best Buy did not have the same Link Sys adapter version 4 so they sold me a Net Gear that was a G not a B and said it would work. So now I see both recordings on both Tivos and can transfer back and forth and both Tivos use the network to get TV Guide info instead of the phone line..

Someone broke my laptop by accident a few weeks ago and I went to Best Buy and found another Toshiba Satellite L25 S1194 at a good price with the same if not better features as my old one. This one has an Atheros wireless card in it. I lose my whole internet connection all the time.. I constantly have to click on disconnect and reconnect... Toshiba had me call Lyk Sys after doing a couple things. Lynk Sys said if my Tivo adapters are working then there is nothing wrong with the router. I unplugged both Tivo adapters last night which Toshiba recommended to try and still kept getting booted off line on the laptop. Under view wirless networks I think I saw netgear listed one of my wireless adapters but I had unplugged it. Noone seems to know why I am getting intermitten connection on the laptop. The Router people said my Wireless adapters for Tivo only receive don't put out so they shouldn't interfere with my laptop andme losing my online connection..

I was told to go sit in a coffee shop for a couple hours and see If I lose it there which I haven't done yet. I did it one day for maybe 45 minutes and it stayed online. I am sure it's something in my house.. Is my router old since it's just an 811 b and my laptop has a newer card then my old one and it's something G but it works with B? Do I need to turn off my desktop when using the laptop? I get internet on the laptop but every so often it drops and I am no loger on line. I even uninstalled the driver and rebooted and let it reinstall.. Desktop is fine and both have Windows XP...

Sorry for the long post I just didn't know if someone could help me or has a solution to my problem.

Thanks, Rose

Hey girl, had this one too, very simple and quick to solve if you know your stuff.

Just click Start->Settings->Control Panel->Administrative Tools->Computer Management. Once the Management console opens up look at the left menu and click Services and Applications. Then click Services and look at the bottom of the list for Wireless Zero Configuration. Right click on it and click Stop. Right click again, click properties and set the Startup type to Manual. Click ok, sit back and relax: your problem is solved. I said it was easy!

One quick note: you will perfom this routine on your home while connected. Every time you want to connect to another wireless network(e.g. at the cafe) you will have to go to the management console again, start the service, let windows configure your connection and stop again. This is a major annoyance, I understand... but it's way better than having your connection dropped every 10 minutes. Ugh, Microsoft is a ***** !

Ok are you sure that once I do this I won't lose my connection in my home anymore. Why doesn't Toshba know to tell me that? I have two Tivos with 2 wireless adapters along with my router. The router people Link Sys said if my Tivos adapters are working with my Tivo which they are then it's not them to call Toshiba. They said it was one thing then another. Then one person said it may be my laptop and my hardware. But I did what you said. Right now I am laying bed but last night out in the living room where I mostly am it happened 3 or 4 times. I have to disconnect then reconnect and I am back on but it always says I am still connected that is why Toshiba mentioned a hardware problem.

So now when I go to view wireless connections it says windows cannot configure this wirless connection and tells me to star the wirless zero thing.. Before I would view wirless and see Belkin 54 listed which is my one wireless adapter which is what I thought was interfering. But Toshiba told me in the beginning to delete using Atheros Network and use Windows then last time they had me put the Toshiba one back and use it instead of windows. So If I am using this other network and not windows it's ok to have stopped this. Tomorrow night I will stay on line for longer like 2 hours and see if I stay connected.. Do you also have a Toshiba? I did what you said but am still a bit confused. I'll see what happens in the next couple days..

Ok last question now? So your saying when I go to a coffee shop or hotel I have to restart the wirless zero thing? I can leave it started until I get back home then stop it again right? Or start it and stop where I am at. Cause I know I did the coffee shop thing once and didn't lose my connection but was only there for about an hour or a little more. But one night at home I lost it after almost 2 hours and sometimes it's 3 or 4 tmes in an hour. So If I turn off my pc then back on will it find the internet? Am I still locked on a secure network? How did you know to stop this wirless zero? It seems like Toshiba would know this but thanks for telling me.. I still think my Tivo adapter interferes but Link Sys they don't put out they just receive.. So who knows.. But thanks again for your help and I hope this helps...

I am so sorry I just reread your post and saw where you said after I stopped the wireless zero thing it to go to Properties and change automatic to Manual so I did. What does that do? When I go to coffee shop or hotel and click start again do I have to put the maunal back on automatic? I really appreciate your help.. I don't do internet outside my house hardly at all so I think I will be ok I hope.. Thanks So Much

Rose

I started it again and put itback from manual to autopmatic. I give up!! Noone can help me!! I will go to a coffee shop and stay for at least a couple ours and play a game at pogo.com and try it again if I stay connected it's something in my house.. My Tivo adapters or my router. Rose
