hi guys, just registered and in need of help,
got a sony laptop running xp with built in wifi,
and a pc with win 98se and just brought a
belkin wifi 802.11g card for that pc, thing is
can not get the 2 to link no matter what i
try, have added and removed both cards software
wise, removed windows networking and re added, tried
removing tcp/ip etc and re adding, went though the
winxp wizard and copied the settings into the
belkin software but still nothing, i only want a
peer to peer (think ad hock? wifi terms) and
getting no where... do i need an AP? or am i
missing something...??? One strange thing is
that winxp says i cant connect to the network
even though i set it up to run on that
machine...?
Should i put xp on the windows 98 machine? Any
help desperatly needed and apprechaited!!!!!!!

I personally have had poor experiences with BELKIN
APs so I'm soured on them.
While XP supports peer-peer networking natively, WIN98SE
does not, if fact its a 'Non-aware OS from
most networking standpoints. SO YES, upgrading it
to XP would be required.
But, you first have to have sure the BELKIN
supports peer-peer, not all devices do. I do
not know that device but a call to their tech
support will quickly tell you.
I'll assume you're you're setting SSID to same name
(exactly) and WEP is off. Download Netstumber
(free) at their site and run it. It'll show
you what WIFI signals are in the area, what
channel, SSID, etc.

To be fair to Belkin, they work no problem with
win98 SE providing the two machines are set up
properly, same channels, correct IPs... The Belkin
help sheet should tell you how to set it up.
Win98se also (I think) have a tutorial.
