IBM continues to enhance wireless security through both authentication and encryption. The 11a/b/g Wireless LAN Mini PCI Adapter supports the following security features and standards:

Wired Equivalent Privacy (WEP)
Future support for the new Wi-Fi Protected Access (WPA)5
Advanced Encryption Standard
802.1X Authentication
In addition, IBM offers the Embedded Security Subsystem (ESS) on selected ThinkPad systems. The ESS can be used to augment 802.1x authentication and security, storing authentication credentials such as ID/Password or digital certificates for Transport Layer Security (TLS) networks supported in Microsoft™ Windows® XP.

Product positioning: The 11a/b/g Wireless LAN Mini PCI Adapter offers enhanced flexibility and performance for multiple wireless LAN (WLAN) technologies into a single adapter. This product joins the existing portfolio of 802.11b wireless Mini PCI adapters: Cisco Aironet Wireless and Intel® PRO/Wireless 2100 3B.

Customers who purchase select ThinkPad® T40, R40, and X31 models — with integrated 802.11b wireless Mini PCI adapters and UltraConnect™ antenna — can upgrade their systems to 802.11a or 802.11g functionality with the new 11a/b/g Wireless LAN Mini PCI Adapter.

ThinkPad models with integrated 802.11a/b functionality may not be upgraded with the 11a/b/g Wireless LAN Mini PCI Adapter.

This new release will support Wi-Fi Protected Access (WPA) and Cisco Compatible Extensions (CCX).
