D-Link DBT-122 USB Bluetooth Adapter

D-Link DBT-122 USB Bluetooth Adapter Review

D-Link DBT-122 USB Bluetooth Adapter

Installation:

It took us a week from the time D-Link sent it for review, we tested it from various angles. We skipped all the specification here, a good manual and software installation guide comes with it anyway!

We put the CD which comes with D-Link DBT-122 USB Bluetooth Adapter, followed instruction, it was a case of OK, OK, and more OK until you get a windows telling you the hardware does not exist, you plug in the adapter and press one more OK and bingo all is installed. In Windows XP, no need to reboot, in win98, rebooting was necessary.

Configuration:

The D-Link DBT-122 comes with a clever wizard, a windows add/remove hardware like panel, there you can configure all sorts of devices, computers and networking with ease. No problems there.

Testing:

We decided to mix as many machines and signals as possible..
We plugged it in a machine running Microsoft Windows© XP© as server to other computers, laptops, PDAs in a Wi-Fi network. The second test, we used an old Quad Intel Pentium Pro server running Win98 SE configured as the above server (Pentium® Pro CPU is a socket 8 and the mother of the Intel® Pentium® Xeon® for people who are not old enough).

Other machines and devices were:

1- Intel Centrino® Wi-Fi Laptop
1- Intel Centrino Bluetooth embedded Laptop, with wi-fi disabled!
1- PDA with Wi-Fi and Bluetooth
1- Mobile phone with Bluetooth embedded

Configured, synchronized and paired each one, the results were:
- Signal was picked up in each one quickly
- Send and receive files was as good as it can get, even for very large files, wireless data transfers was 700Kbps, it was quicker than using our Wi-Fi network. For the phone and PDA, it was no problem using their services, overall very good.
- 30 feet or so was the range of signal, we tried at 40 feet and somehow, although faint, was still there.
- The DBT-122 uses enhanced 128-bit data encryption, tested its security, result was as expected, reliable software!
- Connecting to the internet through the network server using Internet Connection Sharing did give us a bit of confusion, but that could have been because we already had a wi-fi network server installed and we needed to disable the wi-fi wireless connection and enable the Bluetooth connection instead.

The adapter was tried and tested on the laptop and the machine and connected, picked an excellent signal from at least 20 feet, with many different machines and network signals bouncing around it, wireless landline phones, mobile phones as well as other hardware relying on signal, its Bluetooth signal was not disturbed.

Reviewer's Opinion:
- Good value for money, others seem to be twice the price, are they capable of more than what this one is capable of, hard to imagine!.

Robust and comes with a clever software from a tried and tested world leading manufacturer. The D-Link DBT-122 has a better range perhaps than the manufacturer's recommendation. I can see one of the best uses for it is outdoors, texting or writing/checking email from a laptop with it stuck in the USB port and the mobile phone serving as the gateway.
