What's the difference and which do I need?

I have a wired network in my home -- server (workgroup) and 3 pc's, connected to a cable modem with a Netgear 4-port router. I want to add wireless capability.

If I'm understanding some of the responses in various forums, it sounds like I should get an Access Point, rather than a wireless router, and connect it to a LAN jack in as central a place in my home as possible. With this kind of setup, can multiple (2) wireless laptops connect to the Internet at the same time? Do they get their IP, etc. from the wired router like the wired pc's do?

Out of curiosity, if I used a wireless router, would it conflict with the wired router?

Thanks for your help.

Mmmh, It wouldn't be a good idea to connect another router to your router.

Definately use an Access Point. Plug the Access Point directly into your router via the ethernet port. This way, the Netgear router will provide the network address translation (NAT) and provide the IP addresses for your clients to be able to connect, via the Access Point. You should be able to connect as many devices as you want, depending on available bandwidth. Wouldn't reccommend more than 10 devices per AP really.

Should be fairly simple. Position the AP somewhere were you will get good all round coverage, you may just have to experiment with this as it is not an exact science!
That OK?
