Hi, sorry to be a pain...
I have a Toshiba laptop with Wifi and a PC at home. Wherever I am with the laptop - it recognises that there are wireless networks in the area or whatever and it even says it's connected. However, I can never get on the internet...am I being really stupid?!

No you are not being stupid I remember going through this with my smartphone. Your laptop is telling you that these are the avaialble Wireless Networks but aren't necessarily opened to the the public or 3rd parties. They are visible but protected.
