Hi, I have a netgear wireless router DG834G but the range is not good
enough to cover my whole house, so I was advised to buy a wireless Access
Point WG602 so I did. I tried to set this up not knowing that much about
how to do it but I did a bit of reading and set the AP to act as a
repeater.
I still doesn't work, if anything it seems to be stopping me from accessing
the internet but still allowing me to access the wireless router
connection.
What I was wondering is do I need two access points, one attached to the
router and one set free somewhere in the house because currently I can't
get this setup to work. And, if it is the case that I need two access
points, it would be cheaper for me to exchange the AP that I just bought
for another router the same as I already have and just have one router
upstairs and one router downstairs and have two separate wireless networks
so that as I walk up the stairs it disconnects from one network and then
connects to the one with the strongest signal. Some people have told me
this won't work though, and haven't explained why. Is there a problem with
having two routers in the same phone line (different floors and different
sockets but technically the same phone line)?
I've just installed the same Netgear router myself, but am restricted to
siting it at the front of the house as that's where the 'phone socket is.
I have an office in the garden which will only just pick up the signal but
it drops off quite regularly.
I've noticed that Netgear are selling the WGXB102 wireless range extender
for about £90 - one part of it plugs into the router, and the other part
just plugs into a power socket (in my case one in the center of the house)
- this bit acts as an additional access point, hopefully increasing the
range out to the office at the back of the garden.
I've posted a message on the hardware section of this forum, asking for
reviews of the product (I don't think it's released in the UK yet - due in
a couple of weeks).
