Product Description

Don't Take the Manufacturer's Word for It! Everybody knows about pre-engineered buildings - they now account for almost 70 percent of all new low-rise construction in the United States. But few architects, engineers, or buyers know enough about them. This completely revised and updated reference - the only one from an author unaffiliated with an industry trade group - offers valuable and unbiased information that can save you money and time - and that may even save your building! Full of essential features, tips, and advice, this new Second Edition includes nearly twice the amount of material and illustrations that was in the first edition. It: goes beyond manufacturer-supplied information in pinpointing potential design pitfalls; points out specific recurring problems of metal building systems and explains how failures can occur; updates recent changes in the building codes and the MBMA manual; offers practical information on the design of cold-formed purlins and girts, exposing questionable methods used by some manufacturers; includes greatly expanded coverage of purlin bracing; supplies a wealth of hard-to-find information on selecting and specifying walls (including problems with specific wall systems); explains critical considerations for MBS foundations not covered in manufacturers' specifications; includes several new design examples dealing with selection of primary framing, preliminary design of purlins, girts, and eave struts, design of moment-resisting building foundations, plus a comprehensive case study of additions to existing buildings. This title also: lays out new information on renovation of primary frames, secondary members, roofing, and walls; adds a wealth of information on metal roofing including best-practice design details; supplies new end-of-chapter review questions; and, provides roof-to-foundation understanding of all metal building design tasks involved in specifying or evaluating metal building systems. Plus, this book gives you sample specifications that protect the buyer, help with avoiding construction problems, sources of additional useful information, renovation tips, and a look at leading-edge industry trends. This is the one book that is a must-have for any professional involved with pre-engineered buildings.

Users Product Reviews:

Product Review Summary: Finally, what I've been looking for.

The foundations for pre-engineered steel buildings are somewhat unique in the field of architectural engineering and pose some design problems that have to be addressed in the field. For quite awhile I've looked for an engineering book that discusses and gives guidance on those issues. Most of the ones I've found in the past, briefly touch on the subject and then say "consult your local structural engineer". Well, I am the local structural engineer.

So I was happy to find this book which does discuss those issues (lateral loads, moment resisting foundations, etc.) in a way that can be used in the real world, specifically with the construction techniques typically used for metal buildings, complete with optional approaches and sample calculations.

I would recommend it highly for anyone who designs foundations for metal buildings.

Product Review Summary: excellent resource!

I am a civil engineer (specializing in land development) trying to learn more about structural engineering. Pre-fab steel buildings are common and I regularly get calls in my consulting business related to this topic. I have little depth in this branch of engineering but this text explains many important topics you would want to know to get started. The book is particularly good for introducing the engineer to the actual construction nuances- many items I suspect a good GC would simply know as "rules of thumb" are explained with exhaustive reasoning and descriptions. This book is not mathematically rigorous / analytic but it will provide various design options and compare the relative strengths and weaknesses of each design selection. I just got the book a couple weeks ago and have gone through the first 5 chapters plus chapter 12 on foundations. I strongly recommend readers to force themselves to answer all of the questions at the end of each chapter which can be a little tedious (isn't it always?) but definitely worth it. Overall, I have nothing negative to say about this book.

Product Review Summary: Very Informative

This book provides a good overview of metal building design and construction. It covers the design of the buildings themselves, as well as the design of the foundations to support the buildings, which is normally done by an outside structural engineer.

Product Review Summary: Wealth of Information

I was looking for a book with practical information about installing and erecting metal buildings. This book goes much further, with in-depth information about how to design metal buildings. I'm an engineer so I really appreciated the wealth of info. There's a possibility that some readers would find it to be too much information.

Product Review Summary: Enlightening

This book explains topics only treated in a consultant's office. If ever. Newman has accurately identified relevant and otherwise hidden concepts for development in his book. Also very well researched.
