Product Review Summary: Excellent read on how 4G will impact consumer and corporate behavior Excellent read for corporate managers, investors and business strategists on how 4G will impact consumer and corporate behavior, change market dynamics. Not overly technical, good 1000-10,000 foot view.
Product Review Summary: Not for the Technically Inclined I was originally debating between purchasing this book and 3G Wireless Networks, Second Edition, and opted to go for this overview of a newer emerging technology.
How to tell if this book is for you: If you like buzz words such as "Digital Swarm" (which the author is quite proud of, and uses liberally throughout the book) and high-overview descriptions without actually explaining anything in technical detail, then this book will meet or exceed your needs. For example, "4G wireless will marry incredibly high speeds anywhere you go with contextual awareness to create an immersive, 'user-centric' wireless experience" (hardback, pg. 11). A great leading phrase if that's how it starts, but unfortunately that's how it ends: With generalities. It is, in my opinion, meant for the mid-level manager (think "pointy haired boss") who supervises technical folks yet has a very limited understanding of technology themselves. In short, if you believe that the Internet is a "series of tubes", or prefer to gloss over what, exactly, terms like "CDMA" and "GSM" actually *mean*, then the descriptive method of this book will match your style.
If you're technically minded, there are approximately 39 pages in "Appendix B" that provide a good (albeit not excellent nor detailed) overview of the technical issues behind 4G and cell systems in general. Other than that, it's about 150 pages of allegories and non-specific, non-technical stuff. Which is disappointing, significantly. Given the small size of the book and overabundance of non-technical allegories, overviews and general conversation along with the price, it's simply one of the few purchases I regret making.
To be fair, there are some significant insights throughout the book (thus the two, instead of one, stars), but they are embedded in brief paragraphs that do not elaborate beyond their initial premise. So, yes, I did come away from this book more knowledgeable than I was before regarding 4G and cellular technology. Unfortunately, not in line with my original (technical) expectations.
Caveat Emptor.
Product Review Summary: Field guide to the changing game of wireless Everyone recognizes that wireless is changing the way the world operates... this is the first book that I've seen that doesn't use the "crystal ball" method to predict the future. Instead, it describes in great detail two very different worlds that we could potentially find ourselves living in - and what to look for to determine if we are moving in that direction. In this fast moving market, being able to "see" the future a few months ahead of the competition is priceless, and this book will help you get there first.
Whether you are a healthcare exec thinking about the future of remote patient monitoring or a retail brand manager exploring how customer swarms will change the way you go to market, this book will help you think through future implications for your business and plan now for an optimal and flexible wireless strategy.
Free of jargon and consultant-ese, and equally appropriate for someone "new" to wireless as well as a seasoned expert looking for a different perspective. What more can you ask for from a quick, easy read?
Product Review Summary: Provides cogent explanation of wireless communication We now live in a world where communication over telephone wires and telegraph cables is being replaced with a new digital and orbital satellite age of communication without wires or cables. This new wireless technology is having a rapidly expanding impact on business and how business is being conducted. That is why "The New World Of Wireless: How To Compete In The 4G Revolution" by Scott Snyder (President and CEO of Decision Strategies International, Inc.) is so timely and so important, especially for those relatively unfamiliar with the ramifications of wireless technology. Informed, informative, and thoroughly 'reader friendly', "The New World Of Wireless" will provide cogent explanation of wireless communication, how to utilize it for new opportunities and advantages, and mitigate risks associated with the transformations compelled by wireless technology. Of special note are the two appendices on 'Taking the WiQ Survey' and 'Wireless 101: Inside the Technology'. Enhanced with the inclusion of copious 'endnotes' and an index, "The New World Of Wireless" is highly recommended reading for entrepreneurs and business managers having to understand the implications and ramifications of wireless technology with respect to their own corporate developments in a highly competitive, often volatile market, and expanding global marketplace.

Scott's background as an entrepreneur, Wharton professor, and strategy consultant uniquely position him to understand and leverage Digital Swarms ... and even more powerfully ... communicate those insights into actionable strategies for readers of this book.
This is a must read for all technologist of the future but is also critical for business leaders in technology and non-technology companies. It is as applicable from the iPhone app developer to the venture capitalist to CEO's of Global 1000 companies.
