Product Description

In a world torn apart by war, one man would search a lifetime to find what he once lost: a woman named Julia....

Losing Julia

Patrick Delaney was just a boy when he marched off to war in 1918. But on the stark battlefields of France, amid the horror and the chaos, Patrick forged a bond that would shape the course of his life. Daniel was Patrick's best friend, his comrade-in-arms. But it was Daniel's lover, Julia, who would change Patrick forever. Julia's letters, shared by Daniel in the muddy trenches, touched Patrick in ways he never could have expected. But years would pass before he finally met her at a war memorial in France. There, on a field still scarred by battle, Patrick closed his eyes in silent prayer and opened them to the woman he had never seen but always loved: Julia. After a brief, passionate encounter, Patrick made a fateful choice and Julia slipped away, perhaps never to return. It is just the beginning of an astonishing story that will span almost a century, a story of memory and desire, history and destiny--and of the people who slip from our grasp, only to hold us forever....

Product Review Summary: Losing Julia

A poignant story of lost youth, lost love, and lost personal choices told through the thoughts and memories of the aging main character-- a great read!

Product Review Summary: Losing Julia

One of the best books I have ever read and I read a lot of books !!

Product Review Summary: Achingly Poignant Lesson on Life and Love

Set in WWI France, this love story is unpredicatable and so very moving and powerful; I am still pondering Hull's ambivalent message.

Product Review Summary: Truly different, but well worth it

It's taken me a couple months to read this book. I've had to put it down for a few days and then pick it back up when I was in the mood to read it again.

The novel is written in Patrick's, an 80-year-old World War I veteran, perspective. He flashbacks to the time in the war and a time about 10 years after it. In the war, he becomes friends with a fellow soldier named Daniel. Daniel has a girlfriend named Julia back in the US and, through Daniel's musings, Patrick begins to fall in love with Julia.

Patrick finally meets Julia at a memorial in France 10 years later. They share a special bond that cannot progress because Patrick is already married.

The novel is not written chronologically, with the War first, followed by the memorial, and finished with old age. Instead, it is written truly like an old man remembering his past experiences. The descriptions of the war are unbelievable and the mutterings of a lonely old man are eye-opening. The one-liners can be so moving, making a person want to reach out and console Patrick.

Even though it is a serious, somewhat hard, read, I recommend anyone to take the time to read the book from beginning to end. Only then will a person be able to understand the depth of this book.
