Product Description
Stones from the River is a daring, dramatic and complex novel of life in Germany. It is set in Burgdorf, a small fictional German town, between 1915 and 1951. The protagonist is Trudi Montag, a Zwerg -- the German word for dwarf woman. As a dwarf she is set apart, the outsider whose physical "otherness" has a corollary in her refusal to be a part of Burgdorf's silent complicity during and after World War II. Trudi establishes her status and power, not through beauty, marriage, or motherhood, but rather as the town's librarian and relentless collector of stories. Through Trudi's unblinking eyes, we witness the growing impact of Nazism on the ordinary townsfolk of Burgdorf as they are thrust on to a larger moral stage and forced to make choices that will forever mark their lives. Stones from the River is a story of secrets, parceled out masterfully by Trudi -- and by Ursula Hegi -- as they reveal the truth about living through unspeakable times.

Product Review Summary: One of my all time favorites I have read this book four times now, and each time it's gets better. Anyone who thinks this is a book about a mentally ill woman and a dwarf is missing out. Ursula Hegi takes us into World War II Germany in a way we don't usually see. By first connecting us to the people in the small German town of Burgdorf she gives us an insightful look at how the German people may have felt about what was happening in and to their country. She made me feel Trudy's pain, strength, rage and love in a way that was uncomfortable at times... yet I didn't want to book to end. For masterful storytelling and a raw look at humanity, Stones from the River is a must read.
Product Review Summary: Powerful and Lingering It was a few years ago that I read this book. It is one I never forgot. It is powerful and it lingers. I just happened to find myself looking on the internet for audible books and hoping to find "Stones From The River".....stopped by Amazon and decided to write this review!
Product Review Summary: Excellent Read Was talking with an elderly European friend about Hitler's rise to power. Our discussion led to my query about how everyday Germans responded to his 'leadership'. My friend recommended this book. Hegi provides a believeable account of life in Germany during the rise of Hitler. Her characters are knowable and thoroughly human. I finished the book having a better understanding of how this terrible time in history occurred.
Product Review Summary: No book yet! I cannot really review the product because I have not yet received it. I just emailed the source last night but haven't heard back from them. I couldn't see a way to contact Amazon about it. I realize I should have alerted someone sooner but I wasn't in a hurry for the book and just realized I had ordered it about a month ago.... I will update when I see what the twochics do.
Product Review Summary: Hard to read and took me forecver, but I enjoyed it! Well, this is a hard book to review. Let me start by saying it took me quite a while to read. It was an intriguing book that I couldn't wait to get back to, but it had something special about it.
The book was referred to me as a good read about the Holocaust. I was heading to Germany and wanting to know more. At the end of my trip I began this book.
Ursula Hegi really has a way with words. The way she explains people and their personalities is amazing. There were a lot of people to keep track of in this book. It got confusing at times.
As far as just a good read, I would suggest people read it. It wasn't my favorite or even close, but I'm glad I read it. I learned alot!
