Product Description

Apologetics authority Paul Copan tackles popular sayings that often leave Christians speechless, such as "All religions lead to God," "Who are you to judge others?" or "Jesus was just another great religious leader." He provides readers with thoughtful explanations of anti-Christian slogans and brief answers to help them continue their conversations with non-Christians. In addition, Copan answers questions about the unevangelized. Study questions for group or individual use are included.

Product Review Summary: Scholarly written but suitable for laypersons.

"True For You But Not For Me" Overcoming Objections to Christian Faith is a revised edition of a previously published book in 1998. This book has 33 "mostly" short, "mostly" easy to read chapters that cover different topics that often come up when sharing your faith with others. The reason I say mostly is that some topics are more difficult and require a little more time to "digest" and require more information to explain. From "Christians are intolerant of other viewpoints" to "It doesn't matter what you believe - as long as your sincere," the author gives many references and biblical answers to counter religious pluralism and moral relativism rampant in our society.

At the end of each chapter the author provides a summary of each chapter and where to find more information for further reading. The book is highly foot noted so no statement or quote is unsupported.

Each chapter is pretty much stand alone, so this book can be used as a handbook to read the chapters in any order. This makes it an excellent tool for a church or pastor's library. This book should be read by every Christian working in ministry or in schools of evangelism. We always need to be ready to give an account of our faith and I believe that this book is a useful tool to accomplish this.

This book was given to me free of charge from Bethany House for a review.

Product Review Summary: Total Sidestep of Mainstream Objections

Copan provides a set of answers to questions regarding Christian faith; however, the questions he chooses to answer are among the least damaging objections to Christian faith.

With such an abundance of negativity and skepticism regarding Christian faith in this day and age, there is no shortage of objections and difficult questions that one has to deal with. Copan chose nothing of importance to answer; instead spending the bulk of the book dealing with predefined questions that hardly amount to any serious objections. One wonders if he is either unaware of current atheist and agnostic views toward Christianity is or if he set himself up with Stawman questions to attempt to give the perception of a convincing book.

The bulk of the book deals with Christianity as opposed to relativism. Relativism, based on the notion that there is no objective truth, is easily shown as faulty logic by both atheists and Christians leaving one to wonder why Copan felt the need to put up such a defense.
A lengthy rebuttal to relativism hardly represents the mainstream objections to Christianity leaving Copan's argument unnecessary.

Had Copan been willing to tackle questions regarding the issues with Biblical circular logic, certainty among Christian view as opposed to open mindedness of the agnostic view, emphasis on faith over critical thought, and many other pertinent questions, then he would have at least been on the right path. Regrettably he sidestepped these mainstream issues and provided at best a thin support for Christian faith. Many of his answers also contained no logical backing, such as his reasoning for why Jesus is greater than other leaders such as Buddha and Confucius SOLEY because Jesus made much more astonishing claims. If astonishing claims was all that was required for greatness than insane asylums would be filled with worldly figures. Any Christian expecting to answer objections to their faith using these lines of thought will find nothing but ridicule.

With so much discussion regarding religion from all perspectives, there is much to choose from. Copan's inability to take on real questions and back his answers with sound logic leave this book near the bottom, and one I would not waste time with if seeking to strengthen one's Christian views or better understand Christian faith.

Product Review Summary: Perfect For the Christian Faith

In a society concerned with nothing more than what "we will do tomorrow" or "let's drink and be merry for we know not what tomorrow brings", Christians worldwide have begun to shift to the other foot, and completely leave the scene of Evangelizing.

I do not call myself an evangelist, strictly because when someone says, "Well, thats true for you but not for me" I let it stop me from sharing the good news of God, and in reality, I just let that person's blood drop between my fingers(in other words, I could have offered Jesus to that someone).

Paul Copan has authored a brilliant book "True for You, But Not for Me", he said: "Do not let this statement be a conversation stopper, because in actuality, the Relativist is the one who believes he/she has the Moral Absolute.

A few topics he tackles:

The claim that Christians are intolerant of other beliefs.
The claim that Evangelism is akin to shoving religion down people's throats.
The difference between judging someone and humble correction.
And My favorite: Why there can never be Amish terrorists.

Paul Copan has written a sharp, intelligent book at the right moment in history when people are looking for answers elsewhere, and sometimes the Christian wrestle with doubts as well. This book is a keepsake, because it is plainly, it is deeply engrossing and it may be a bit too much to devour all at once but it certainly answers most questions and help equip those of the faith for evangelizing.

Product Review Summary: "True For You But Not For Me"

Paul Copan presents several strategies for Christians to share the message of the Gospel with confidence in his work "True For You But Not For Me." Broken into chapters that answer specific objections to the tenets of Christianity, Copan delves deeply into Christian doctrine to offer Christians solid answers based on biblical truth.

I appreciate the way Copan presents the facts in each chapter and includes a summary of bullet points that sum up the main points of the chapter. More importantly, Copan relies on and provides Scripture references throughout the book which provides Biblical proof for his points.

I recommend Paul Copan's insightful book "True For You But Not For Me" as necessary reading for Christians of all ages. The book offers solid answers to the skeptics who challenge the truths of Christianity.

Product Review Summary: Tough Faith Challenges

I found this book to be very informative and quite the conversation starter for those tough questions Christians encounter. Not only does the author give extensive answers to questions that run from "Who are you to judge others?" to "Is Jesus the only way?" he also encourages the reader to be an instrument of God's Spirit -- leading other to the Truth, that is Jesus.

While this book is a bit bland and not for everyone, it is a great one for those who are interested in apologetic style reading.
