Product Description
Hip-Hop's literary and artistic merits are evident when compared to classic poetry and it's easy to link the great poets of the past to the contemporary Hip Hop poets of today: compare Robert Frost to Public Enemy, Shakespeare to Eminem, and Shelley to the Notorious B.I.G. This interactive workbook-style format is fun for teachers and students, as it illuminates the art of the written word with in-depth analysis of poetic literary devices, writing activities, and other innovative methods.

Product Review Summary: Teach Poetry? Use this book! this is one of the best tools i have used in my classroom. my students are mostly minorities and they went from a group that complained about poetry to a group that enjoyed poetry! i highly recommend this book!
Product Review Summary: Gimmic Alert Are you working in the bronx or somewhere of a similar socio-economic status? If not the unfortunate truth is that this book is unlikely to meet your needs.
In relation to the works that fall into 'the classics' category you can find numerous resource books for less money that will provide more interactive lesson material. The worksheets in the book are just that. Boring old question answer worksheets. The kids will be snoozing in minutes.
On to the hip hop. It is easy enough to imagine that given the huge quantity of hip hop that has been produced over the last 3 decades that there would be at least a handful of works that justify the attention we normally give to literary analysis of poems. Having read this book it appears this is not the case. These rappers are known for their outstanding performance skills, however, their lyrics are so simple-minded that school children could easily improve upon them.
Also, bear in mind that the authors have omitted large sections of the raps so that they don't contain any unacceptable cursing, mysogeny, drug references, anti-white racism or other features of most rap. However, kids will undoubtably go home and search the full versions on youtube which are full of all the above. Get ready for phone calls asking why you helped teach the kids how to imitate criminals and disrespect women.
Product Review Summary: Kids really relate to it I teach 8th grade English in a predominantly white, suburban town. I used this book to create a whole poetry unit which is based on music. The activities are great for teaching figurative language while comparing old-school poetry with old-school rap! The kids get excited when they know the songs, and I even sing to them. Their final project is a song analysis. It's really enjoyable and it's a great way to introduce a taste of hip-hop culture.
Product Review Summary: Good language art tool In an alternative school setting this book reaches kids who identify with hip hop, rap, and other forms of modern art forms, but who have no experience with classic literature. It bridges the gap.
Product Review Summary: Excellent classroom resource This book was introduced to me in an English Department meeting held by our county. It was introduced with such enthusiasm, I just had to check it out for myself. The book is WONDERFUL. Lesson plans are included in the book including poetry writing activities and analysis of poetry sorted by literary devices (such as symbolism, imagery, metaphor, etc..)
My students LOVE the selections of poetry in the book -- the "hip hop" selections allow them to see that contemporary song lyrics are indeed poetry and the classic selections allow them to see how "classic" poetry is similar to popular music lyrics today by using the same techniques utilized by the classic poets. I would rate this book an A+ and definitely recommend it for high school English teachers.
