Product Review Summary: HUGE mistake

got this one at best buy and i was happy with it because the unit is a combination of cable modem and a wireless router in 1. bad part is that it disconnects the internet if you do simultaneous wireless connections/downloads. it has nothing to do with my internet provider. all my wired devices can download multiple files without disconnecting. it is when i connect my pc via the wifi that the internet connection is being disconnected. I even tried downloading just 2 podcasts simultaneously and then the internet goes down and you have to power cycle the modem.

so, if i were you, i would not even try it. oh yes, it will be good for 30 days. but after that, i wish you good luck. hehehe

Product Review Summary: STAY AWAY

This would get zero stars if that was an option.

This router is absolutely useless for wireless. Every morning my RSS feeds crash the router. After I reboot I can usually make it through about a tenth of my morning reading before it crashes again. Basically, to read all the news stories I need to in the morning, I have the option of either rebooting between six and 10 times or plugging directly into the modem.

This thing is junk. The only thing worse than this modem is the technical support, which is strangely enough unable to "support" for "technical" issues, such as, the modem crashes a dozen or more times a day.

If you don't mind resetting your modem several times a day, restarting downloads and not being able to watch videos or stream audio, then by all means, get yourself a WCG200. If you don't feel your life needs any more aggravation, go with Motorola.

The WCG200 is a wireless router and a cable modem. It only succeeds at half of its mission on any regular basis.

Product Review Summary: Do not buy

I hate to pile on here, but I also made the mistake of buying this thing. As others note, it cannot maintain an internet connection for more than a few hours, usually drops within minutes. I have tried it using both WEP and WPA. I have been through the mill with both my cable provider tech support and Linksys'. Finally convinced Linksys that it was their problem. So they sent me a new one that has exactly the same problem. Apparently that satisfies their warranty. I've tired of trying to get someone at Linksys to admit that there is a problem, so have gone back to using an old motorola modem and a new Belkin router. Uses more real estate but works fine.

Product Review Summary: Worst Wireless Router Imaginable

Transmit more than 20kbps for 20 minutes over the wireless and the router crashes. Linksys has never fixed the problem and doesn't intend to. I'm horrified that this worthless product is still on the market.

Product Review Summary: Long time owner

I was disturbed by the sheer number of negative reviews for this product. I won't say that anyone else's experience is wrong, but I will give you mine. I have owned this gateway since late 2004, maybe early 2005. I can't remember when I got it because I have had it that long. It has never failed. Ever. I have used it in three completely different geographic locations, first in Washington with Wave Cable, then in Virginia with Comcast, and now in North Carolina with Roadrunner. Initial setup is always "difficult" with various ISPs but only because they make it that way in an effort to try to tell me that the machine won't work on their system. This has happened to me all three times, and guess what? Its funny that when you get shifted to Tier 2 or higher tech support, within 10 minutes my box is up and running. Don't let the cable companies fool you with their shady business practices.

I have had occasional problems with dropped connections, but I can honestly say after seeing several firmware updates and cable service providers, the problems I have had were provider/congestion based, not from the machine. Comcast was the worst provider by far and I had plenty of days of service outage with them but so did everyone else in the neighborhood. But that aside, I have only had to reboot the machine on occasion (once per 6 months maybe). In the last year this problem has not been an issue, so maybe the firmware version I am running (version 2.0.3.9.31-1023) has solved any minor issues that existed.

I have used this with a variety of types of computers, both desktop and laptop, some running windows, and others running various flavors of linux. I have not had any issues with connectivity. Running WPA encryption, and everything works fine. All computers can see each other, share files, share a printer without any problems. I prefer the setup method in this machine where you have to access its internal settings from a web browser and adjust them yourself. I do not trust all the new variety of routers from various manufacturers touting their "one button setup" feature. In my opinion to properly setup your router you need to go in and understand what the settings are.

I refused a long time ago to continue renting a cable modem from the service provider. If you keep it more than a year or so, you could just buy your own modem. And then you have to have your own router as well. Why not just have two boxes combined into one? It is my believe that ISPs often are the root cause of people's frustrations with this product in their attempt to get another $10 a month out of people for modem rental.

I plan on keeping this machine until they make a gateway that is Wireless N band. Waiting for these to become more widely available. But for now, my WCG200 keeps right on chugging away.
