Product Description

D-Link DWL-P50 Power over Ethernet (POE) Adapter

Users Product Reviews:

Product Review Summary: Does exactly what it's supposed to do.

Spares having to supply separate power to remotely placed Ethernet devices, and reduces network clutter and the number of those annoying "wall wart" transformers that are the plague of electronics these days. Great for placing Web cams in out-of-the-way places where you are not likely to have 120VAC outlets.

Product Review Summary: Aesthetically Non-Appropriate

I tried to use this for my security cameras. I was thinking that it would inject the power over the Ethernet cable so that I could have one Ethernet cable go to the security camera.

It turns out that you have to plug this adapter into the Camera power jack in addition to the Ethernet cable. . . rather than input the power at the switch, and run a single cable to the camera. The power cable provided from the adapter to your camera isn't that long either, so I didn't even bother to plug and test the adapter.

They should've added this fact to the description of the product.

Product Review Summary: Likes to blow smoke and splatter electrolyte, but still works! =)

I've had 5 of these make a popping noise, put out a bit of smoke, and eject some electrolyte (presumably all from a popping capacitor). However, after these episodes, they've all worked just fine. I'm using the 12 V setting, no idea how it'll work for 5 V.

They were popping when connected to a Netgear fs108p switch. After manually adding ground to the switch, no more of these babies have popped. Kinda miss it, to be honest... but it's nice not to have to worry about the sprinklers going off.
