Product Description

The DSL-2640B supports the latest ADSL2/2+ standards to provide higher performance and longer reach from your Internet Service Provider’s (ISP) Digital Subscriber Line Access Multiplexer (DSLAM). With the DSL-2640B, you can create a wireless network to connect 802.11g/802.11b devices as well as a wired network to connect up to four 10/100 Ethernet devices. Share your high-speed DSL Internet connection, photos, music, videos, printers, and Network Attached Storage (NAS) with multiple users. Plus, the DSL-2640B includes a built-in QoS engine that helps prioritize Internet traffic to enable smooth Internet phone calls (VoIP) and lag-free online gaming. This device also includes Dual Active Firewalls (SPI and NAT) to help protect your network from potential attacks from across the Internet.

Users Product Reviews:

Product Review Summary: So so

Compact. Good price. But user interface very difficult to figure out and use. Tech support on phone was usually good.

Product Review Summary: This great product saved my job

I use my computer for my job. I connect to client sites and do online computer work for them. The modems from my ISP were garbage. I was constantly getting line drops and unexpected speed changes. Their technical support stinks. And where I live I have no alternatives - exactly one DSL provider. My broadband life was miserable. Then one day someone suggested I buy a better modem and see if that makes a difference. It was easy to install - all I needed was to remember a couple of settings from the old modem. The difference: like night and day! I get ZERO drops, and the speed is a rock-steady 3-times what the old modems did on the average. Thanks D-Link for providing such a reliable and easy-to-use product. It looks kind of cool too.

Product Review Summary: Great All-in-One modem, but you need the EU Firmware

Set-up was easy with the auto-detect utility. Be sure you get the DSL filter from your phone company, because the modem will not work if you plug it directly into the phone jack. At first, this modem created an immediate IP assignment conflict between two devices which rendered internet access useless. I had read about the improved EU (European) firmware offered through ftp.dlink.pl. I went to the site and upgraded the firmware which immediately resolved the IP address conflict. The 4.00 EU firmware also provides an improved interface and improved features like static IP assignment to connected clients. The built-in dynamic DNS feature worked very well. Initially, the modem did not allow access to a connected web server despite the dynamic DNS being set-up correctly, along with Port Forwarding. The access problem only occurred when an attempt to gain access was made WITHIN the modem's network. Once I tried accessing the client from outside the network, the system worked well. Overall, the features work as described and this device saves you from having to have a DSL modem and Wireless Router. I am disappointed that D-Link does not offer the EU firmware on their North American website, nor does it offer the Australian model which have has Draft N wireless (versus B/G).

Product Review Summary: Router MUCH BETTER CHOICE than AT&T's

I purchased this router at the recommendation of a friend. It is great. The only bad thing is that the installation instructions were a little difficult to understand. It doesn't contain installation instructions for VISTA users, but if your are savvy enough to figure it out, you can definetely install it. I am not as used to VISTA, so it took me a little longer to figure it out. So far, we love it. It is definetely 1000 times better than the worthless router AT&T sells you. Overall....great! I am very happy to have purchased it.

Product Review Summary: Runs warm but runs well with AT&T Yahoo

PROS:
+ Easy setup with AT&T Yahoo using the D-Link "Wizard"
+ Great feature set for the price
+ Wireless setup (with my Lenovo laptop) was very easy
+ Appears to be well constructed

CONS:
- Runs a lot warmer than my 2-Wire gateway
- Documentation written at a level that assumes some knowledge of setting up modems and wireless connections

My 2-Wire gateway stopped working this morning. While I suspect it may be due to a dead power adapter, I decided it was time for a better router (I ordered the 2-Wire adapter and if it fixes the problem, I've got a backup gateway in case of future problems). I did quite a bit of research and even though I was concerned about the heat issues with the D-Link 2640B, it did seem that many people were satisfied with the purchase so I picked up one locally. So far I'm very pleased with this gateway. Using the Wizard, AT&T settings were quickly recognized and I was up-and-running within 10 minutes. Setting up the wireless connection for my Lenovo laptop took a little longer, which I attribute to the manual assuming the user has some understanding of wireless security settings, SSIDs, etc. I've set up a wireless connecton only twice before so at least I had some idea. The wireless took about 15 minutes but worked flawlessly and was at least as fast as my connections with the 2-Wire gateway. Altogether, the D-Link DSL-2640B is a great little gateway for the price. Just make sure that you install it in a well ventilated location and have the phone number for your ISP's support desk handy! (One excellent idea I read somewhere - if the modem you're replacing is actually still working, access and copy down the modem settings BEFORE unstalling it and installing the D-Link. This sounds like it could be a time saver, particularly if you use a broadband provider that is not one of the majors.)
