Product Review Summary: Infuriating Disco Ball I've owned this router for about a year and it has performed well for me. My main computer is wired so I wouldn't notice every wireless glitch but when I have been wireless, it seems to work reasonably well. My wife and kid that use the wireless more often do complain a modest amount about losing connectivity.
But the worst part is that I can no longer handle the ridiculous blue disco ball on top of it. You can temporarily turn it off by pushing on the ball, but it keeps turning itself back on, usually within about a day. In the evening and at night it reflects unwanted light all around my office, living room, and kitchen. I thought I was purchasing a router, not a 70's night club prop. The fact that I paid $100+ for this router only to realize that I'm now a victim of this stupid gimmick is infuriating. I can only assume that the entire design team at NetGear must prance around the office dressed up like the Village People singing YMCA since there is no other reason why anyone would think mounting a disco ball on a router was a good idea. Next time I'll have to find a router made by a company that takes its product design a little more seriously.
Product Review Summary: THIS ROUTER IS THE WORST! Internet crashes daily and requires a FULL ROUTER RE-SET-UP EVERY TIME! I'll try and keep this brief as I am so fed up with this piece of JUNK. I've been calling their tech support almost daily, as EVERY TIME I start my computer, I have NO INTERNET SERVICE. I've called so many times, I've memorized their run-through script. I have asked numerous times for a supervisor, yet they have NEVER transferred me to one. The problem, I explain isn't resetting my router and wireless, (which means connecting the ethernet in another room and wasting about 45 minutes), it's keeping it connected! They had me update the firmware today. Then they hung up WITHOUT MENTIONING THAT THE NEW FIRMWARE WOULD REQUIRE ANOTHER RESET OF ALL MY ROUTER DATA. So I called back. The rep explained that's what happened and walked me through the set-up for the millionth time. And guess what? My connection crashed 10 minutes after getting off the phone with her. They've promised a replacement if this happens again. Which I'm certain will be the case tomorrow. DO NOT BUY THIS WORTHLESS ROUTER!!!!!!! GRRRRRRR! Bonfire anyone? I'll provide the marshmallows!
Product Review Summary: Can run DD-WRT and use as wireless bridge I bought this originally to switch over to Wireless N from G but since everything I have uses wireless G I just recently decided to use this as a wireless bridge for my blu-ray player with my wireless old wireless G router.
You can flash this router and run DD-WRT and then use it as a wireless bridge. The actual process to do this takes about 15 to 20 mins but having never done this it took me over an hour but did work on the first try after following directions on here [...] and [...]. Its working great as a bridge and I haven't had any issues with dropping the connection.
If your not computer savy this probably will take you some time to do but in retrospect it was not too difficult. The instructions are pretty long but if you follow them you will get it working.
You need to download two files from the DD-WRT website. The first is a .chk file and dd-wrt.v24_mini_generic.bin (there are a few versions but the mini is the one that is recomended). Both of these files can be found here: [...]. Install the .chk file first following the directions on the above links.
I got this router refurbished for under thirty dollars so its was way cheaper than buying the wireless dongle for the blue ray player and also allows multiple connections where the dongle would just support the bluray player.
The fact that you can set this up as a wireless bridge is a big plus. Without that it would probably still be in the box it came in.
Update: I have had this running with DD-WRT firmware for over 3 weeks now and it still has not once lost connectivity. Completely trouble free operation. Maybe running it with the netgear firmware causes others to have connectivity issues. Its been rock solid so far for me so if you get this and flash it with DD-WRT you should have good results. I paid under thirty for this as a refurb unit and it saved me $50 from not having to buy a wireless dongle for my blu-ray player. In addition it give me a second access point to hook up another wired PC and if the blu-ray player craps out I can use this with any other netflix ready player out there.
Product Review Summary: Great Router, Once the its reflashed! First, I have a WDS mesh network in my house. Second, I learned from my LinkSys (Cisco) days never trust or rely on manufactured router s/w. Third, as soon as its possible re-flash with DD-WRT this will open up options (including WDS) that are not part of the manu s/w. The dual bands come in handy and I am thinking of getting another one to connect directly to my DSL switch, instead of that old LinkSys 54GL (great stuff too, with DD-WRT on it, at least the version I have - not all are created equally you know).
