Can Access points be bridged im developing a basic network in theory only
that has to cover 500 feet the proposal is for a cat 5 connection into a
normal network for the access points this however means the backbone will
have to be very long can the distance be bridged wirelessley so the
backbone can be shorter
Andrew, I've been looking at a similar situation where I need to provide
wireless access for laptops in a workplace which is about a 200m by 600m
area (600 ft by 1800 ft maybe) and I don't want to run a separate backbone
or vlan to cater for it's security. Our local supplier has suggested I use
a Netgear product which works simultaneously as an access point and a
bridge. It's a WG302 and is only newly released. Theoretically only one
device needs to have a cabled connection and the other or others just
bridge from it (5dBi omnidirectional antenna pair) while providing local
laptop coverage. The whole set of wg302s can be web interface managed.
Their antenna power can be tuned to control coverage. I like the sound of
them, but they're just not available in Australia yet. I've chased up
their availability and found a few other manufactures make similar
products.
