I need to set up a domestic WiFi network but need a large range to cover half my street (long story as to why). My current Netgear ME102 isn't up to much with its fixed antenna.

The option I have is to buy an AP (ie D-Link DWL2100AP) and an external - external antenna (D-Ling ANT24-0500), priced at £77 and £69 respectively, total £146. Both use an SMA connector.

Question: Is this a good combination of kit. I'm relatively happy with £77 for the AP but £69 for the antenna (8db gain omni) is a bit OTT. Can I use another antenna with an SMA connector?

Forget multiple AP's and repeaters, I have 2 DECT phones, a DECT baby monitor and at least two other WiFi nets get into my house as it is.
