I've looked around but I can't seem to get a
clear answer on this. I fairly proficient in
networking matters, but I can't figure this one
out. I bought a wireless router yesterday for $21
at good ol' Fry's but I cannot connect wirelessly
it to my wireless dsl gateway.
I turned off DHCP server on the router, and
setup the IP to be within the DSL Gateway's
range, but it won't automatically connect. If I run
a standard ethernet cable from the Gateway modem
to the WAN port on the wireless router it will
connect just fine... So I guess my question would
be why is wireless so different? and Is there
a resource online explaining in more detail how to
connect these two devices? Also my DSL Gateway is
in RFC1483 bridged mode so I can't have a
static IP without paying more from my ISP. I
don't have a lot of money to spend on this,
but the main reason for wanting this setup is to
connect my Xbox to the wireless router and use
Xbox live without buying the $90 wireless game
adapter (which I heard sucks anyway) Any resources
on this would be greatly appreciated. Would a
wireless Hub with a DHCP server work (although I
think they are also expensive), or is that
basically the same thing as a wireless router?
Thanks.
