hi there, quick question about how to boost my wireless system... I have a summer house / office at the end of my garden - 50 meters away from my wireless router. occasionally I can get a very very low signal but would like to boost it to get a reliably good connection.

I currently have a bt voyager 2100 router.

What do you suggest that it is i need? a better antenna? booster/ amplifier or bridging kit?!

cheers,
Matt

I take it you're trying to get a connection on a wireless laptop Matt?
If you have a window overlooking the summerhouse? Try changing the position of your router.
Another suggestion is a cheap AP like a Pheenet 554G connected to a spare LAN port on your router. Dump the supplied detachable antenna on the AP, in favour of a directional free standing 8/10db panel. Pheenet do a nice little unit, mod no - ANT008PS. Again, this will probably only work in a window overlooking the summerhouse.
The only sure way of getting a stable link would be AP and client with direct LOS using external antennas.
Let’s know how you get on.

hi thanks for the reply...
i have my router in the window facing the summer house but as its quite a long garden the recption is either non-existant or poor... the summerhouse has a desktop but yes i need a laptop connection up there aswell.

so you suggest a access point, which i connect to my router and add to it a more powerful antena pointed at the summerhouse? is that correct?

With the standard ant on your router you should get 50m without too much of a problem, even through a window.
I suspect your problem is at the summerhouse end. Take your laptop and have a wander up the garden. I’d be surprised if you hadn’t at least 3 bars outside the building.
I’ve used USB AP’s with built in 10db directional panel antennas in similar circumstances.
Sorry to bang on about Pheenet but I use their stuff all the time. The WLU-805G for £35 would be my first recommendation (Vista drivers available). Plug and play so you could swap between Desktop and Laptop. Again aim for a window location in the summerhouse for the unit; it does come with a meter (ish) lead which can be extended.
You can view the above at www.solwise.co.uk/wireless-wlu-805g.htm.
