Hi, I have a peculiar problem, our building provides wireless connection, my roomate has a personal laptop and he is able to get wireless intyernet, the problem that i'm facing is that, i have a laptop provided my my company and so i do not have administrative access to it. Even if i buy a wireless card.....i would not have access to use/install it. My question is is there any possiblity that i can make use of that wireless connection.
is it possible to connect to the wireless internet if i connect to my roomates laptop via a male-male usb data transfer cable?

There is no guarantee nor any obligation that anyone is required to answer you. It is only out of people's kindness and free will they may feel like posting an answer. Politeness and explaining the problem very well are the two most likely motivators for a chance of a favourable reply.

From what I read in your post, it is vague and not explained properly. Your room mate is probably subscribed to the service and you are not, you may connect to his laptop for printing or retrieving / exchanging files on his hard disk if he lets you through sharing, BUT connecting to the Internet is another matter. Wireless internet service providers are smart enough to only allow his Laptop as a client (IP address restrictions, passwords and keys etc..). Because the Internet connection is physically housed in a server that has direct access to the Internet (direct line or a hotspot), it acts also to negotiate who can access it, hence also access the Internet (Internet Connection Sharing for example). It'll have a set of users who are allowed, but whoever connects to the users machines is also subject to the same restriction, allowed only if subscribed. Your room mate may allow you to exchange information back and forth between his laptop and yours, the internet connection is up to the provider.

Connecting using a wired connection, a cable as you say is the same thing. I can see the logic you are trying to convey, if the two laptops are united and become as one through wired / USB cable or wi-fi connection, why not the two connect to the Internet. In the later case, the whole street, not just people in the building can connect to one or two laptops, have a free ride (wardrive) bankrupting the Internet network provider.

You hear of many people wardriving , connecting for free by exploiting open networks in offices, centres etc, that is different when the network is not protected and the servers physically connected to the internet are usually Open and anyone in the vicinity can connect.
Wireless Internet providers or Hotspots subscribers are subject to a lot of security checks, your room mate may be using one of those or similar.
