HP ProCurve Networking Executive Named Vice-Chair of LAN Standards Group
PALO ALTO, Calif., March 29, 2004 -/The Wi-Fi Technology Forum/- HP announced that Paul Congdon, chief architect of HP ProCurve Networking, has been elected vice-chair of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, Inc. (IEEE) 802.1™ Higher Layer LAN Protocols Working Group, at last week's IEEE 802 Plenary Session in Orlando, Florida...
This is the second time in the past two years that experts from HP ProCurve Networking have been selected for leadership roles in the IEEE standards organization.
The 802.1 Working Group develops standards and recommended practices in 802 local area network (LAN)/metropolitan area network (MAN) architecture, internetworking among 802 LANs, MANs and other wide area networks, 802 Link Security, 802 overall network management, and protocol layers above the Media Access Control (MAC) & Logical Link Control (LLC) layers. The further development of these standards will better enable enterprise LAN interoperability, and encourage standards-based product development.
"The tremendous growth of IT and networking technologies in recent years is largely due to the consensus-based work of international standards bodies," said Congdon. "Extending the complete benefits of these benchmarks to people and businesses requires a consistent commitment by networking companies to open, standards-based innovation."
Congdon has developed and standardized technologies such as Systems Network Architecture (SNA), X.25, Fiber Distributed Data Interface (FDDI), Ethernet, Layer 2/3/4 Switches, Wireless LANs, Virtual LANs, Link Aggregation, Internet Small Computer System Interface (iSCSI) and Access Security Protocols including IEEE 802.1X. He currently holds six patents in various network technologies and has several more in process.
As chief architect for the HP ProCurve Networking Business, Congdon is responsible for specifying, architecting and designing network infrastructure products and software. Congdon started with HP 18 years ago as a software development engineer responsible for the development of networking protocols within HP-UX. He has expanded his focus in networking from end-station components to infrastructure architecture and the design of network devices such as routers, switches and iSCSI storage devices.
