NETGEAR Launches First VPN Wizard of Its ProSafe VPN Firewall Routers
NETGEAR Launches Industry's First VPN Wizard Designed For Small to Medium Businesses Further Enhancing Ease-of-Use of Its Business-Class ProSafe VPN Firewall Routers
SANTA CLARA, Calif. – April 28, 2004 /The Wi-Fi Technology Forum/- NETGEAR, Inc., (Nasdaq: NTGR) a worldwide provider of technologically advanced, branded networking products, announced the launch of the industry’s first VPN Wizard, designed specifically for small-to medium businesses to simplify the setup and administration of Virtual Private Networks (VPN) through NETGEAR’s popular line of business-class ProSafe™ wired and wireless VPN firewall routers.
Available as a free firmware upgrade, the timesaving VPN Wizard is accessed through NETGEAR’s award-winning browser-based Setup Wizard. The step-by-step VPN Wizard simplifies the configuration of the VPN by setting default values as proposed by the VPN Consortium (VPNC), querying the user in non-technical jargon and providing context-sensitive help. Though the VPN Wizard assumes the use of a pre-shared key to simplify the setup, it also enables users to easily customize the network parameters.
“NETGEAR is continuously striving to make its standards-based business-class networking solutions easier, more secure and more reliable for users in the small- to medium-sized business segment,” explained Lianne Caetano, NETGEAR Product Line Manager, Business Products. “Growing businesses, more often than not, do not have access to a full-time IT administrator. The VPN Wizard enables users without an extensive IT background to easily implement, configure and manage a secure VPN.”
The NETGEAR VPN Wizard has been available since February 2004 on the FVS318 ProSafe VPN Firewall and the FWG114P ProSafe 802.11g Wireless Firewall with USB Print Server. It will also be available in May 2004 via a free firmware upgrade for the FVS328 ProSafe VPN Firewall with Dial Backup that supports 50 IPSec VPN tunnels and the ICSA-certified FVL328 ProSafe High-Speed VPN Firewall Router that supports 100 IPSec VPN tunnels.

About Virtual Private Networking
One of the most secure Internet security encryption methods available, a VPN is a private network established within a public network infrastructure, such as a corporate LAN or the Internet, enabling computers on remote networks to securely communicate over the unsecured Internet as though they were on the same local, secure network.
To create a secure VPN connection between a computer and a private network (client-to-server) or between a remote LAN and a private network (server-to-server), a highly secure VPN “tunnel” is established. Once data has entered the tunnel, it is practically impossible to access it until it has emerged at the other end of the tunnel. Only at that point can the data be accessed and decrypted using encryption and passwords known only to the computers at each end of the VPN tunnel.
VPN technology was developed over a long period of time using a variety of standards, but common VPN techniques have emerged to make VPN technologies more compatible between manufacturers and operating platforms. Features differ by product, but most experts agree that VPNs include encryption, strong authentication of remote users or hosts, and mechanisms for hiding or masking information about the private network topology from potential attackers on the public network.
