NETWORKING GIANT Cisco confirmed today it is working with the Independent Paris Transport Authority to build wireless LAN base stations across the city.
The project could mean a roll out for the entire Paris Metro network in time, said Cisco.
Each Metro station is, on average, around 550 metres away from another, so the scheme would give widespread coverage in an area, Cisco hopes.

The network will be based on a 40,000 kilometer fibre optic link but both underground travellers and people on top will be able to use the network, Cisco claims.

A number of services providers have agreed to participate in the scheme.

The wi-fi network will kick off initially with a year long polot above ground along hte Bus 38 route connecting the Gare du Nord to the Porte d'Orleans.

Cisco hopes that the scheme will extend to one of the biggest networks in the world, with up to 10 access points for every station.

The Cisco Aironet 1200 Series points are concealed behind Metro signs and the link and connected on a Gigabit Ethernet loop using a Catalyst 2950 Series switch at each station except for the current hub at Chatelet, which uses a Catalyst 3550 Series.

Has it started yet? We don't know... µ
