Contec Innovations and Hong Kong Wireless Dev. Centre to Deploy Hornet™ System

Vancouver, Canada and Hong Kong SAR, -/June 02, 2004 The Wi-Fi Technology Forum/- Contec Innovations (“Contec” or the “Company”), a global provider of mobile data infrastructure, is pleased to announce that the Company has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Hong Kong Wireless Development Centre Ltd. (HKWDC) for the deployment of Contec’s Hornet™ DE mobile services delivery platform.
The Hornet will be installed in HKWDC’s facility at Cyberport in Hong Kong SAR and will be connected to all six mobile operators in Hong Kong: CSL, Hutchison, SmarTone, Sunday, New World and Peoples. Contec is currently installing a Hornet DE at a similar development facility in Canada, with the goal of providing application developers in each country with enhanced access to the markets in the other country.

This initiative calls for an open and accessible environment for wireless developers to quickly and cost-effectively build and test applications. Hornet is a standards-based mobile services delivery platform enabling rapid development and deployment of new mobile data applications across all major communication modalities (text, multimedia messaging, WAP, email, etc.).

This strategic deployment fits with Contec’s vision to support the full wireless application development and deployment environment – enabling developers to build and garner revenue from their applications more quickly and easily, thereby providing mobile service providers with a steady stream of new mobile data services – all built around the Hornet system.

For this project, Contec is deploying the new Hornet Developer Edition (DE), specifically designed for development and test facilities such as the HKWDC, and Contec is anticipating the installation will take place in the second quarter of this year. HKWDC will manage the system and be the first line of support for the development community in Hong Kong.

Contec is being provided new financial support for this project by the Canadian Government, via the National Research Council (NRC) Industrial Research Assistance Program (NRC IRAP), which is Canada’s premier organization for R&D and innovation support for Canadian SMEs.

“We see the deployment and connection of the Hornet to be an excellent way for local developers to create and test applications for both the local and export markets”, said Stephen Lai, Director of the Hong Kong Wireless Development Centre.

“A reciprocal system is currently being implemented in Canada which can be connected to the one in Hong Kong – we see this as a real opportunity for Hong Kong application developers,” added Perry Quan. “This initiative will open up additional markets for Hong Kong developers, via upcoming installations of Hornet in North America, China and other regions”.
