Parks Associates emphasizes two distinct value propositions of WiMAX

Parks Associates emphasizes two distinct value propositions of WiMAX

Dallas, Texas -/June 05, 2004 Wi-Fi Technology News/- WiMAX, often misrepresented as a single wireless standard, has multiple implications for the telecommunications market and offers two major value propositions, broadband access and nomadic/portable broadband, according to Untethering Broadband: WiMAX, 802.20, and Others. This new report from Parks Associates argues that WiMAX must be put in the broad perspective of the broadband wireless market in order to understand its likely development.

?Using the term WiMAX in a homogeneous fashion has created a lot of hype and confusion in the industry,? according to Yuanzhe (Michael) Cai, senior analyst with Parks Associates. ?Going forward, it is essential to distinguish between the two different flavors of WiMAX, IEEE 802.16REVd (WiMAX will only promote the 256 OFDM PHY mode when this standard is ratified later this year) and IEEE 802.16e (this mobile extension will not be ratified until the second half of 2005), as they appeal to different market segments. Calling the former Fixed WiMAX, and the latter Nomadic WiMAX may help lessen the problem.?

802.16REVd, in its first stage of outdoor installation, benefits the industry merely in the form of cost reduction, according to the report. ?Major service providers are unlikely to be intrigued until 802.16REVd reaches the second stage of indoor installation with plug?and-play CPEs,? Cai said. ?Believe it or not, 802.16e is positioned to compete against mobile broadband wireless technologies such as cellular, the proposed 802.20, and proprietary technologies.?

Untethering Broadband: WiMAX, 802.20, and Others examines the next-generation broadband wireless standards and technologies, including WiMAX, 802.20, 3GPP, and proprietary technologies. It profiles the major technology and solution providers, provides consumer perspectives on mobile broadband wireless solutions, identifies potential markets and service providers, and forecasts industry growth for 802.16REVd, 802.16e, 802.20, and other broadband wireless products.
