Sentech Deploys Portal Software for Africa?s First Broadband Wireless Internet

Sentech Deploys Portal Software for Africa?s First Broadband Wireless Internet

Portal Software Deployed by Sentech to Provide Billing Solution for Africa?s First Broadband Wireless Internet Service

CUPERTINO, CA -/June 09, 2004 Wi-Fi Technology News/- Portal Software, Inc. (NASDAQ: PRSF) announced today that its flagship billing solution has been deployed by Sentech for Africa?s first broadband wireless Internet service. Portal took prime responsibility for this project and delivered it on time and on budget. The completed project was delivered in 10 weeks.

Portal also announced that it has opened an office in Johannesburg, South Africa.

The MyWireless service from Sentech offers broadband wireless access to the Internet based on Universal Mobile Telecoms Standard (UMTS TDD), one of the families of standards accepted by the international standards body for next-generation cellular communications, the 3G Project Partnership (3GPP). UTMS TDD uses time-division duplexing (TDD).

This choice of technology enables higher data rates, so much so that, in some countries where it has been deployed, UMTS TDD is marketed as ?portable DSL.? Sentech?s service can provide subscribers with download rates of up to 3Mbps, as well as a fixed monthly fee, regardless of bandwidth used, and portability within coverage areas. The service is presently available in several parts of Johannesburg, Pretoria, Durban and soon will be in Cape Town. Sentech?s MyWireless is easy to deploy and can be user-installed (plug and play).

?We chose the Portal solution over the competition for a variety of reasons,? said Jacgque Odendaal, of Sentech. ?Portal?s solution provides us with a flexible, scalable architecture that contributes to a lower total cost of ownership. In addition, the Portal solution is able to process network events in real time and features out-of-the-box connectors with major back-office applications such as SAP.?

?We?re proud Sentech selected Portal to be part of Africa?s first broadband wireless offering,? said Alan Laing, Portal?s vice president and general manager for Europe, Middle East and Africa. ?Such services are of particular relevance in this continent due to the paucity of fixed lines available for Internet access, and we see great potential for the technology.?

    Portal Opens Johannesburg Office
As Portal?s presence on the African continent continues to grow with recent customer wins, including Sentech, the Company has opened an office in Johannesburg, South Africa. Portal?s operations in Africa are led by Laurent Bodard, Portal?s Regional Sales Manager. ?Africa is no longer a niche market for billing solution providers,? said Bodard. ?By raising our commitment, building a long-term presence with a full-blown team, we?re demonstrating that we?re in the continent to stay.?
