Manchester NH, Using Signull Technologies Launched Free Wi-Fi
Manchester NH, USA -/July 13, 2004 - Wi-Fi Technology News/- The Greater Manchester Chamber of Commerce and Signull Technologies launched the first free wireless network in downtown Manchester at the Manchester Chamber's July 12 City Hall press conference. Manchester is only one of two cities in New Hampshire to offer free wireless communication to its businesses and residents. One of three satellite dishes was installed on the rooftop across from City Hall, providing most of downtown with wireless Internet access.
"We see this as a great service to the residents of Manchester, its downtown businesses and employees, and City Legislators," said Chris Williams, VP of Economic Development and Advocacy for the Manchester Chamber. "Those who work downtown will be able to conduct their work outdoors and during lunch breaks, while residents will be able to access the Internet for recreational and informational use in the downtown cafes and sandwich shops. In addition, Aldermen who are in session for hours at a time can get real-time updates from their constituents in Manchester through PDA's and wireless laptops without having to leave their session."
The service is free for the first hour of use each day. Beyond the first hour, time may be purchased in half hour and hour increments ($2 per half hour), by the day ($9 per 24 hours), or by the month ($25 per month).
The press conference began in the Aldermanic Chambers where the Manchester Chamber of Commerce, Signull Technologies, and representatives from the Mayor's office announced the launch of the wireless service with a cable-cutting ceremony. Alderman Mark Roy spoke to the benefits of wireless communication for the Aldermen and Signull Technologies explained how the system worked. Several volunteers were also set up outside City Hall demonstrating the technology by logging on to the Internet to buy movie tickets, surf for things to do in Manchester, and register for college classes on line.
