Leading Chinese vendor ZTE to draft new international standards

-/July 23, 2004 - Wi-Fi Technology News/- ZTE Corporation, China's largest listed telecommunications equipment provider, has been chosen by the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) to draft two important international standards that will help to shape the future of the world's next generation networks (NGN).

Following a meeting of the NGN Joint Rapporteur Group in Geneva, ZTE will now draft standards to cover the requirements and framework for crucial end-to-end quality of service (QoS) architecture for NGN (Y.e2eqos.1) and a QoS framework for IP-based access networks (Y.ipaqos).

"This is an exciting opportunity to contribute to the development of the world's communications infrastructure," said, Mr Xie Daxiong,SVP,ZTE. "ZTE greatly values and works with the ITU's international standards and this invitation is a vote of confidence in our continued ability and commitment to remain at the forefront of telecommunications technology and R&D."

ZTE plays an active role at the ITU, having already drafted eight international standards covering optical transmission, international security, gateway and 3G terminals, and five recommendations on optical communication, IP networks, information security and network management.

A member of all three ITU sectors - telecommunication development (ITU-D), telecommunication standardisation (ITU-T) and radio communication (ITU-R) - ZTE is working to develop tomorrow's networks and services. The corporation has hosted several important conferences and participated in more than 30 international standardisation groups, including the Third Generation Partnership Project (3GPP), the CDMA Development Group (CDG), the DSL Forum, and the Network Processing Forum (NPF).

ZTE is committed to developing new technologies: every year, for the past ten years, the corporation has invested about 10% of its revenues in research and development; almost half of all ZTE personnel are involved in this area and more than 6,000 of the 17,000-strong workforce have Masters degrees, 500 have Ph.D.s. The corporation owns 1600 patents, with more than 90% of these being for original innovations, and operates 13 research and development centres worldwide, including establishments in the Sweden, the USA and South Korea.
