STRATEGY ANALYTICS: NORTH AMERICA DOMINATES GaAs DEVICE MARKET
Focus on Cellular Handset Power Amplifier Market Continues to Pay Dividends
London, England - -/August 04, 2004 - Wi-Fi Technology News/- Strategy Analytics' newly released, "GaAs Device Vendor Market Share," research outlines 2003 vendor share for the $2.7 billion GaAs device market. The cellular handset market continues to be the primary driving force for the GaAs device industry, and in 2003, North American companies led the pack.
The top four companies - RF Micro Devices, Skyworks, TriQuint and M/A-COM - all based in the US- accounted for 51 percent of the total GaAs device market. Japanese companies - NEC, Sony, Matsushita, Mitsubishi Electric and Fujitsu - accounted for 21 percent of the total market in 2003, demonstrating leadership in both GaAs MMIC and GaAs discrete markets.
"The continuing strength of GaAs, in particular within the cellular handset market, will not be enough to offset continuing consolidation in the industry," observes Asif Anwar, Director, GaAs Service. "For continued success, companies will need to lead the curve in terms of both performance and cost. Pooling complementary strengths in markets and technologies is one way for companies to achieve this. Achieving autonomy from a larger parent organization is also a means through which companies can increase their presence in merchant markets. We've seen both strategies applied recently with the emergence of Eudyna Devices and Freescale Semiconductor."
