Siemens ICN: FTTH vs DSL - a business case comparison

Siemens ICN: FTTH vs DSL - a business case comparison

Munich, Germany -/20 September, 2004 - Wi-Fi Technology News/- At the Broadband World Forum 2004 in Venice (Italy), Siemens ICN will report on a business case comparison between Fiber to the Home (FTTH) versus DSL technology in different applications. The results of this study, which are based on extrapolated financial projections, will give some interesting insights.

New applications such as video messaging, video on demand or the transmission of TV programs will gradually increase the demand for bandwidth. While DLS or VDSL can still cope well with this development at the moment, the question remains as to the point at which the copper-based last mile can no longer be operated economically and fiber technology has to take its place.

The case study considers various models and scenarios to show the mutual dependency of services, user expectancy and population development, and also takes account of OPEX and CAPEX spending. It thus gives a useful idea of what carriers should bear in mind when planning their last mile design.

The presentation will be held on Wednesday, 22nd September, 2004, at 3:15pm in the Palazzo dell'ex Casin? (TecPreview Theater).

Siemens Information and Communication Networks (ICN) is a leading global provider of communication solutions for enterprises and carriers. Its portfolio ranges from real-time IP-based applications, IP convergence solutions and broadband access systems to optical transport networks. ICN also provides consulting and services. With its innovative LifeWorks concept, ICN is developing a uniform platform that transcends the boundaries of corporate, fixed and mobile network, enabling providers to offer new services and enterprises to boost productivity. ICN posted sales of 7.1 billion euros in fiscal 2003 (year-end September 30) and employed 33,000 people.
