Wireless Internet and Municipal Government - The Brazilian Experience
Rio de Janeiro, Brazil-/21 Oct, 2004 - The Wi-Fi Technology Forum/-On November 8th & 9th 2004, Governor of the State of Rio de Janeiro, The Honorable Ms. Rosinha Garotinho will join 100+ Latin American municipal leaders (mayors, municipal technology policy makers, CIOs), technology vendors, service providers and other local stakeholders (banks, retailers, businesses, hospitals, schools) in an interactive session to explore how wireless Internet can bridge the connectivity gap at the root of the digital divide in underserved areas of Brazil and Latin America and provide a new age infrastructure fostering economic development, workforce productivity and enabling delivery of new social service applications in areas of e-health, e-education & e-government.
This by invitation only conference, jointly sponsored by the Wireless Internet Institute, Firjan, the State Government of Rio de Janeiro, UNITAR and the United Nations ICT Task Force will be held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Participants will establish a baseline understanding and prospective roadmap of emerging standards and regulatory provisions affecting local authorities, explore the potential benefits of broadband wireless for local communities and identify and reflect on how to overcome implementation roadblocks and hurdles.
This strategy session does not require any knowledge of wireless Internet to participate and gain from the exchange of information. It will feature guest speakers, expert panels and structured brainstorming workshops, with an emphasis on case studies and experience sharing. Local governments, including the State of Rio de Janeiro, that have already made a commitment to deploying state-wide broadband wireless Internet infrastructure, will share with you their plans and experiences as a means to foster economic and social development, job creation and poverty alleviation. They will be joined international development organizations such as the Inter-American Development Bank, and the Institute for Connectivity of the Americas as well as by selected technology vendors and service providers, including Alcatel, Alvarion, Aperto Networks, IBM, Intel, SR Telecom, Telemar, Embratel, Taho, to discuss their work with local officials.
Given your particular interest in this matter and the high profile of this meeting, we hope you will participate in this event on November 8th and 9th 2004 and register at your earliest convenience to participate in the conference plenary and workshop sessions.
