Net2Phone, Motorola and Cedar Point Collaborate on VoIP for the Cable Industry
Liberty Cablevision is the first customer to take advantage of the newly-formed telephony partnership, providing VoIP services to subscribers in Puerto Rico
BOSTON -/25 Oct, 2004 - Wi-Fi Technology News/- After a successful cable telephony integration and deployment in Puerto Rico with Liberty Cablevision, Cedar Point Communications, Inc., Motorola, Inc. (NYSE: MOT) and Net2Phone (NASDAQ: NTOP) announced an agreement that will utilize the combined resources of the three companies to advance the deployment of packet-based cable telephony services.
The announcement was made at the Fall VON Show (18-21 October, Hynes Convention Center, Boston, Ma.), where Motorola (Booth #1336) and Net2Phone (Booth #105), are exhibiting.
With the agreement, the companies will jointly market to cable operators a comprehensive voice-over-IP (VoIP) offering, including a robust service assurance platform that provides operational reliability through collaboration on software updates, interoperability testing and continued ongoing support.
The solution will leverage Net2Phone?s expertise as a leading hosted VoIP provider; Cedar Point's SAFARI C?? integrated switching system and SafariView Element Management System; and the Motorola Broadband Services Router (BSR) 64000 CMTS/Router and SBV5120 telephony cable modems.
With this announcement, Net2Phone has announced the selection of Cedar Point as a preferred partner for the delivery of voice-over-IP telephony solutions to cable system operators.
Cable operators can leverage the solution to sell their own branded telephony service to their customers utilizing their existing high-speed data network. Calls will be managed via Net2Phone?s Cable Voice Platform and CVOSS (Cable Voice Operations Support System), a back-office monitoring and management system that provides a shared interface between the cable MSO?s local access network and the public switched telephone network.
?As cable operators worldwide have accelerated their telephony activity, they have increasingly requested that we provide them with turnkey end-to-end solutions,? said Charles Dougherty, Motorola corporate vice president, and general manager, IP Solutions. ?The technical innovations and know-how that Cedar Point and Net2Phone bring to this relationship will enable us to provide the comprehensive platforms that best meet our customers? needs.?
?Integrating all the pieces to deliver a comprehensive managed phone service over a cable network is hard. Through this triumvirate, we have demonstrated a clear solution for operators looking to accelerate their telephony deployment by eliminating the stumbling blocks of assembling it themselves,? said Michael Pastor, President of Net2Phone Cable Telephony. ?By acting as both a systems integrator and service provider, Net2Phone is catalyzing the concept of a fully-interoperable IP telecommunications infrastructure.?
?Cable?s ability to meet the expectations for voice services will depend in part on the ability of the vendor community to deliver easily implemented solutions that provide voice quality, reliability and features that equal or exceed those offered by incumbent providers,? said Andy Paff, president and CEO of Cedar Point Communications. ?Throughout our discussions, it was clear that all of our companies share Cedar Point?s goal of providing true carrier-class services that will establish a leadership position for cable.?
In a six-year agreement with Net2Phone, Liberty Cablevision of Puerto Rico is leveraging the joint solution to provide voice, video, and high-speed Internet access bundles to subscribers. In less than five months since the launch of ?triple-play? services, 43% of telephony customers subscribe to the entire bundle and 52% subscribe to telephony and video.
For Liberty Cablevision, Net2Phone is supporting the back office platform, switching and transport, ongoing operations and Tier II+ technical support to deliver a fully managed QoS IP solution. Net2Phone tracks and monitors voice quality and network performance metrics from start to finish and provides cable operators like Liberty Cablevision of Puerto Rico with a full view into telephone calls routed over its network. Net2Phone has deployed Cedar Point?s switching system and performed interoperability with Motorola?s CMTS and MTA.
The Cedar Point SAFARI C? combines all of the elements of distributed softswitching architecture into a single packet-based unit with the security, quality and reliability of Class 5 circuit switches. The combination of SAFARI C? with the PacketCable?-qualified Motorola BSR 64000 enables cable operators to create a telephony infrastructure using standards and carrier-grade platforms with proven interoperability so they can provide the end-to-end quality of service (QoS) control necessary to prosper.
